As a data scientist I provide effective solutions to business problems. To obtain compelling results I combine my training and knowledge in Business Analytics and Data Science with my quantitative research background in Astrophysics.
I have extensive problem solving skills and wide experience in statistics, data modeling, text mining, and various data mining methodologies.
I have 10+ years of experience in data assimilation, analysis, characterization, pattern recognition and modeling. I also have broad experience in efficient data management, image processing, image analysis and software development (especially targeted for astronomical instruments).
I solve business problems to gain insight and leverage that for quantitative advantage. I use R, Python, C++, and Java programming for computational purposes. For statistical inference of the data I mostly work in the R environment, although I am equally efficient in using Python or SAS. I combine Java programing with Hadoop and MapReduce whenever I need to tackle relevant problems. I use C-shell scripting, MySQL programming, and HIVE structure for data management.
I am a world citizen. I have a solid record of working in a global setting including Asia (Bangladesh), Europe (Italy, UK), Africa (South Africa), and North America (USA). This unique work experience helps me attain a deeper understanding of the concepts such as diversity and inclusion from both social and organizational context. It also strengthens my cross-cultural competency.
Outside work, I like to spend my time by getting engaged at various activities such as practicing meditation, or dancing Bachata/Salsa, or watching movies, or reading geopolitics, or traveling, or going for a long drive without any specific destination (just to explore the unknown and unseen).
Data Scientist, Manager @ I am currently working in the Workforce Planning and Analytics team at the Department of Human Resources in TIAA-CREF Financial Services. The following list highlights my current roles and responsibilities:
1) Obtaining insights from employee data analysis, translating them into useful visuals, and presenting key results to business partners.
2) Evaluating impact of analytic methods and software used for employee job performance.
3) Creating and maintaining a relational database (Access DB) for the team for creating Human Resource scorecard and Diversity & Inclusion scorecard.
4) Modeling employee retention and evaluating its impact on business decisions.
5) Developing metrics to quantify Diversity & Inclusion with special focus on constructing innovative measures of Inclusion for business organizations
6) Analyzing return-on-investment of Diversity & Inclusion initiatives
7) Analyzing the perception of company brand recognized both by employees and customers From October 2014 to Present (1 year 3 months) Greater New York City AreaGraduate Student @ From August 2013 to August 2014 (1 year 1 month) Washington D.C. Metro AreaSouth Africa Square Kilometer Array (SKA) Fellow/Data Scientist @ Assisted collaborators at the University of Johannesburg to build radio astronomy infrastructure, promoting radio astronomy to general audience, devising astronomy curriculum, and mentoring students to exploit the benefits of upcoming South African MeerKAT interferometer.
Worked on data associated with molecular gas (CO) properties of lensed (i.e. very distant) galaxies.
Used linear and logistic regressions, naïve Bayes classification, neural network, and k-NN clustering techniques to develop solutions from the data. From January 2012 to August 2013 (1 year 8 months) Johannesburg Area, South AfricaPostdoctoral Researcher/Data Scientist @ Worked in infrared (THz) and millimeter (GHz) wavelength astronomy using modeling, data assimilation, and analysis of remote sensing data collected by space borne telescopes, e.g., Spitzer Space Telescope, Herschel Space Telescope and ground based telescopes, e.g., NRAO Very Large Array interferometer, Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) interferometer telescope.
Developed techniques for assimilating ground based and satellite based data. Develop numerical methods to understand various model predictions and their consistencies with the observed data.
Used various descriptive and predictive models to analyze the data.
Presented research results at scientific meetings. Published research results in proceedings and astronomical journals. From November 2008 to December 2011 (3 years 2 months) Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Software Developer @ Worked as a team member in a Japan-UK collaboration project in developing infrared data processing software dedicated to construct the Akari All Sky Survey point source catalog (Akari is an infrared space borne telescope lunched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA).
Develop complex image processing and analysis modules required to process time series data obtained from Akari telescope and then to create two dimensional images (i.e., maps).
Published research wroks in astronomical journals. From August 2007 to October 2008 (1 year 3 months) NASA Postdoctoral Fellow/Data Scientist @ Worked on infrared (Spitzer Space Telescope) and sub-millimeter (Caltech Sub-millimeter Observatory) data to put constraints on models of galaxy evolution.
Worked on the infrared properties of giant Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies using Spitzer Space Telescope data. The LSB galaxies are an extreme type of disk galaxies that are very difficult to observe in the infrared wavelength. This difficulty makes it highly challenging to develop realistic models of the properties of the interstellar medium of LSB galaxies. With the super sensitive Spitzer data, the research has made it possible to quantify, for the first time, the properties of the interstellar medium such as the amount of dust present in the disk, dust-to-gas ratio, stellar population histories etc. of the LSB galaxies From June 2005 to June 2007 (2 years 1 month) Graduate Student @ Worked as a graduate teaching assistant. Taught Mechanics, Electricity & Megnatism, Basic Optics, and Basic Calculus to freshman, sophomore, and junior students coming from Biology and Engineering departments. Organized undergraduate physics labs and tutored students. From 1998 to 2004 (6 years) Lawrence, Kansas Area
Master's Degree, Business Analytics @ The George Washington University From 2013 to 2014 PhD, Astrophysics @ University of Kansas From 1998 to 2004 Master's Degree, Physics @ Dhaka University Nurur Ph.D. is skilled in: Numerical Analysis, Data Analysis, Python, Image Processing, Astronomy, R, Data Modeling, Statistics, C++, Astrophysics, Physics, Image Analysis, LaTeX, Programming, SAS programming
