From the original focus on sharks, Mote research has expanded to include studies of human cancer using marine models, the effects of man-made and natural toxins on humans and on the environment, the health of wild fisheries, developing sustainable and successful fish restocking techniques and food production technologies and the development of ocean technology to help us better understand the health of the environment. Mote research programs also focus on understanding the population dynamics of manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and coral reefs and on conservation and restoration efforts related to these species and ecosystems.
Mote Marine Laboratory is one of the world’s few remaining private marine research laboratories and, as a nonprofit organization, is funded through federal, state and local grants and through the generosity of individual donors and foundations. Over decades since Mote was created, the world has learned many things about its oceans. One lesson has remained constant: There is still much to discover. From February 2013 to Present (2 years 11 months) Board Member @ Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. is a not for profit social service agency that provides assistance to those in need in the ten-county area of Southwest Florida. In 2012, the agency helped 40,182 people through a variety of programs and services with a committed professional staff and dedicated volunteers. Catholic Charities serves and empowers ALL in need regardless of race, nationality or creed. From January 2013 to Present (3 years) Board Member @ Financial advisory to one of the largest parish in Sarasota and to St Martha's school From April 2010 to Present (5 years 9 months) Special Consultant for Education and Outreach @ Advising and assisting in the reorganization/integration of Education and Aquarium Divisions. From July 2012 to November 2012 (5 months) Sarasota, Florida AreaDistrict Warden @ Helping to oversee and guide a number of local Councils in Sarasota, FL From July 2011 to October 2012 (1 year 4 months) President - Mote Marine Laboratory Volunteer Board @ Mote Marine operates with a volunteer force of some 1400 people and the volunteer board focuses on education, motivation and organization as well as fund raising. Mote Volunteers contribute around 200,000 hours annually.
