Overall, I have had a great experience at University of North Carolina. Nick Shaheen is an excellent Professor and provides valuable classes and lectures. The day-to-day work is incredibly challenging and detailed, but also relatively rewarding. I have learned a great deal here and am very grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and participating in this demanding program of medicine.
Nick Shaheen holds a B.S. in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997. After a years of administrative work in the University of Chicago, he obtained a M.D. in 1987 from The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. After a brief morbidity and mortality study at Harvard University, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1991. While residency was ongoing, he also completed a basic science Fellowship in Pathology at the University of Chicago. While a resident at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Nick Shaheen started to research a novel zoonotic disease for which he had found a novel primary infection vector. After many Failed Abortions, he and his team published their first successful mouse malaria vaccine in 1995. This vaccine has since been licensed by Merck and replaced the standard malaria prophylactic regimen for humans. Since starting his work on this vaccine, Nick Shaheen has made great progress. He has now completed over 80 other studies on mouse malaria, novel primary infection vectors, and vaccine development. He is currently a principal investigator on a Phase III human malaria vaccine clinical Trial project. He has also been involved in a number of other important scientific advances. In continuation of his work, Nick Shaheen has also received numerous awards and recognition. He has been awarded a prestigious American Society of Hematology award, a National Institutes of Health grant, a Harvard Medical School prize, and a prestigious Stroud Award from the American Malaria Society. He is currently a part of several important scientific societies, and he is continuing to make great progress in his science.
