About Nicholas Patler

đź“– Summary

Op-Ed Writer @ Huntington News Network/Staunton News Leader/ Wrote opinion-editorials on contemporary issues with an emphasis on foreign policy and social issues. My goal was to create awareness in regards to policies and actions that degrade others while offering alternatives for uplifting and prospering humanity. From November 2007 to 2010 (3 years) West Virginia/VirginiaFront Desk Manager @ Choice Hotels - Quality Inn Helped manage hotel operations and worked to assure guest satisfaction. From August 2000 to October 2007 (7 years 3 months) Staunton/Verona, VirginiaBook currently in pre-peer review process @ A Human Rights Movement on the Frontier: Building an Underground Railroad Community ... While the Underground Railroad in Wayne County, Indiana has been strongly identified with the remarkable Quaker leader, Levi Coffin, whom this study will consider in-depth, this book will also importantly tell the larger story of the many average citizens who not only participated but also assumed leadership roles and responsibilities. Part of this focus will be on the excluded and marginalized members of society in the Wayne County area—African Americans and black and white women (and possibly Native Americans)—who empowered themselves to work independently and in coordinated efforts with white males over a shared moral commitment and humanitarian goal. As important as the established community in Wayne County was for keeping the UGRR going, this book will also attempt to humanize runaways (who are often portrayed as the faceless objects of pity in many of the white narratives we have), and return them to the center stage in initiating and shaping the history of their exodus and migratory drama. Here we will attempt to take a closer look at the runaways that passed through Wayne County, including their numbers, genders, ages, reasons for escape, and, whenever possible, their personalities. One of the surprising finds is that it appears women with children came through this UGRR center in substantially higher numbers compared to other UGRR locations where men traveling alone was the norm. Book currently in peer review, University Press of Mississippi @ The Governor and the Senator: Black Vision and Power in the Reconstructed South Engaging multiple library and archival resources to write an unusually personal history of the Reconstruction Era that will closely explore the dynamic political careers of Pinkney Pinchback and Blanche Kelso Bruce. The Governor and the Senator will uniquely examine how these visionary leaders deftly navigated challenging political and social terrain to protect the rights and lives of minority populations, and how for a period in history they helped unfold human rights in their regions of the Deep South. We will also explore the friendship between Pinchback and Bruce, as well as contrast their very different personalities and leadership styles that were well-suited for the different southern environments (Louisiana and Mississippi) in which they moved—one stable and aristocratic-like and the other more volatile and contentious—shedding light on the unique realities and challenges involved with reconstructing specific areas of the South after the Civil War. Finally, The Governor and the Senator will give more biographical history on Pinchback and Bruce than currently exists in scholarly sources—making this a historical biography as well as a study in the use of power. Here we will touch upon their lives as a whole and deeply contextualize both leaders (along with their families and contemporaries) within their times, from slavery to Reconstruction, to the post-Reconstruction period. Jackson, Mississippi AreaPublic Safety Officer @ Earlham College Public Safety Officer while attending seminary. Earlham Public Safety encourages and nurtures a nonviolent style and approach to public safety duties and responsibilities. From August 2013 to 2015 (2 years) Richmond, IndianaAdjunct Professor @ West Virginia State University HIST 311: African American History: Spring, 2017, 2018, 2019, and will be teaching course Spring, 2020. Designed course curriculum.HIST 208: U.S. History from 1865 to Present: Fall 2018, Spring 2019, Fall 2019, and Spring 2020.HIST 201: World History: Fall 2018 and Fall 2019. Institute, West VirginiaLibrarian @ University of Virginia Claude Moore Health Sciences Library Charlottesville, Virginia AreaHistorian/Writer @ Independent Scholar Wrote historical/researched-based essay in seminary, recently published in Quaker History journal: "Norman's Triumph: The Transcendent Language of Self-Immolation." I will also be pursuing publication of MA Thesis on the story of the Underground Railroad in Wayne County, Indiana. And wrote two lengthy essays in the edited two-volume series, Before Obama: A Reappraisal of Black Reconstruction Era Politicians (edited by Dr. Matthew Lynch). Richmond, IndianaAdjunct Professor - American History Since 1877 @ Elizabeth City State University I took over the course, American History Since 1877, almost a month into the semester after the professor had to leave and as the academic dean tried to juggle it with her busy schedule. When I came on board, the course was in disarray and the students were discouraged and barely hanging-on. I reorganized the course, taught myself the school's Blackboard online teaching system, and found creative ways to get the students plugged back into the course. I helped them become personally invested in historical discovery and in finding their own voice, as well as improving their writing. With the exception of two of my nineteen students, every "student historian" went from a C/D average to an A/B average (all of them worked for it!), and gave me very good reviews as an instructor, according to the academic dean, and some shared with me directly how much they learned and how much they now enjoyed history. From October 2015 to January 2016 (4 months) Elizabeth CIty State UniversityResearched and wrote historical nonfiction book (hardback, 2004, paperback 2007) @ Jim Crow and the Wilson Administration Based on my Harvard Extension School thesis, I spent two years (2002-2004) engaging and interpreting multiple library and archival sources to transform my thesis into a book. Initially, following graduation, my advisor suggested that I transform my thesis into a journal article. After several attempts, and concerned that I was leaving so much out, I finally decided to expand my thesis and aim for a book-length study. While I did not have anything published at this point, my goal was to nevertheless find a university press to give my study historical/academic legitimacy due to the stringent university press peer review process. Once I secured University Press of Colorado, we worked together beautifully to make Jim Crow and the Wilson Administration into a solid work of historical nonfiction. I also took the initiative to secure all of my own endorsements, and worked diligently to market my book, including C-Span Book TV (where I walked into the Washington, DC headquarters unannounced). From January 2002 to February 2004 (2 years 2 months)
