From February 2015 to Present (11 months) Head of Engineering @ Managing the UECCS engineering department consisting of Systems, Software, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic and Through Life Engineering. From February 2015 to Present (11 months) Programme Manager @ Responsible for delivering the Combat System (CS) equipment to time, budget and quality, as part of UECCSs £32m contract for a Frigate Mid-life Modernisation. The CS is a combination of UECCS and sub-contracted sub-systems, with a total value in excess of £7m. Responsibilities include: • Planning and managing the scope, schedule, and deliverables. • Defining and maintaining successful project organisational and work breakdown structures • Defining and proactively obtaining the project resources. • Management of project management, engineering and production teams (c35 people). • Allocation of project budgets and managing these to successfully meet the business spend and cash targets. • Setting-up and managing global sub-contracts, • Successfully managing risk and opportunities. • Representing the projects at reviews with the Senior Management Team including the Managing Director From July 2013 to Present (2 years 6 months) Software Team Lead @ Managed the UECCS software team with responsibilities including performance appraisal and management, recruitment and retention. This included owning the software development processes and procedures (Agile, RUP and waterfall depending on the project requirements), top down and bottom-up estimates, work package management, mentoring, task allocation and ensuring that the team had the tools and resources to efficiently meet the business need. From August 2012 to December 2013 (1 year 5 months) Senior System Engineer @ System Design Authority (SDA) for two naval Elector Optical Systems (totalling £10m) with overall project technical responsibilities including: • Providing technical support to the winning bids including writing the technical proposals, providing project estimates and supporting contract and sub-contractor negotiations, for both the initial contract and through customer driven contract changes. • Managing the output of c10 project engineers across multiple disciplines (mechanical, support, software, electrical and production). • Managing technical development from inception to customer acceptance, including writing or approving all technical project documentation including project safety approval. • Managing the system engineering work packages delivery to time and budget. • Developing and executing the systems verification and validation to achieve full compliance with the technical and legislative requirements. • Managing the customer and subcontractors technical relationship to achieve very positive project and personal customer performance feedback. • Being the main presenter at successful internal and external progress design reviews. From September 2007 to August 2012 (5 years) Systems Engineer @ Joined General Dynamics (GD) UK as a graduate and worked in a variety of System Engineering roles on the Bowman ComBAT Infrastructure and Platform-BISA (BCIP) project, including: • Being engineering lead / subject matter expert for two new militarised computers (£15m). • Being selected to represent GD on an 8 month secondment, embedded with the customer as part of a cross-company team developed the user and system requirements for the next generation of the BCIP programme within Defence Equipment and Support at MoD Abbey Wood. • System Design Team Engineer developing a logical architecture, sub-system specifications and analysis of operation and system requirements for the next generation of the BCIP From February 2004 to September 2007 (3 years 8 months) Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering, 1st Calss @ University of Bristol From 1999 to 2002 Nicholas Charles is skilled in: System Design, Engineering Management, Defence, Simulations, Telelogic DOORS, Requirements Management, Systems Engineering, Requirements Analysis, Integration, Program Management, Aerospace, Security Clearance
