I have extensive experience in software development and problem solving from my work in industry and from a number of international and highly-collaborative open source projects. I am passionate about using software, science and mathematics to develop innovative new technology.
Data Analyst Programmer @ My role combines statistical data analysis and software engineering. I have particular interest and experience in machine learning, scientific programming and signal processing. From November 2014 to Present (1 year 2 months) PhD Candidate @ The focus of my PhD project is the utilization of evolutionary algorithms (e.g genetic algorithms) to optimize mathematical models of neurons and the communication between them. From October 2010 to July 2014 (3 years 10 months) Developer @ The OpenWorm Project aims to build the world’s first simulation of an organism to help deepen the understanding of living systems. My primary accomplishment has been the incorporation of fluid-mechanical (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) and electrical (Hodgkin-Huxley) models of muscle tissue into a model of the C. elegans nematode. I have also developed numerical optimization tools for tuning biological models. From 2011 to 2014 (3 years) Intern as Research Scientist @ Use of computational modelling and experimental physics (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) to study field stability and homogeneity in MRI magnets. From June 2008 to August 2009 (1 year 3 months)
PhD, Computational Neuroscience @ University of Cambridge From 2010 to 2014 MSci, Physics @ University of Bristol From 2006 to 2010 Mike Vella is skilled in: Python, Physics, Data Analysis, Mathematics, C++, Neuroscience, Mathematical Modeling, Scientific Computing, Java, Linux, Dynamical Systems, Algorithms, Applied Mathematics, Simulation, Matlab
