I headed up the English publishing team which included marketing, publicity and editorial colleagues. The lion’s share of our projects was in regard to book publication but we also created dedicated websites (such as http://www.midnightinpeking.com/), media, and publicity campaigns. I was also responsible for annual staff appraisals, delegating to freelancers and training. On the acquisitions side, I was tasked with discovering, contacting and negotiating with authors and agents. My team published a wide range of books on and from China including Midnight in Peking by Paul French, which won both the 2013 Edgar Best Fact Crime book award by the Mystery Writers' of America and the Crime Writers' Association (UK) non-fiction Dagger award; Frog by Mo Yan, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2012; and a Penguin Specials series of short books on China’s role in WW1. Other non-fiction titles included a photographic history of Shanghai and the world’s first in-depth guide to Baijiu, a Chinese wine, amongst many other titles. As a senior member of the team, annual forecasting, company strategy in the north Asian market and budgets also came within my remit. I also had the honour of managing cooperation with our international colleagues for global publications.
