📖 Summary
Big data, analytics, and visualization specialist with a diverse, international background.Indexer (Metadata) @ Managed intake of product metadata into Amazon.com's database for the Audible.com division. Contract position. From April 2013 to August 2013 (5 months) Resource Specialist (IT) @ I worked and lived as a Peace Corps Volunteer in an urban location (a location is an area where the apartheid-era government forcibly resettled Blacks). I lived with Swazi people and learned their language and customs. According to everyone I met, I was the only white person out of 50,000 living in the location. I taught Math, Science, and English at a secondary school. I also worked at a Department of Education administrative office. My other projects included: *Designing and programming (in MS Access) an operations and client tracking database for a rural rape crisis center with over 1000 annual intakes. *Organizing a series of public events promoting science and scientific careers for National Science Week 2011 and 2012. Over 7000 people were reached at our events. *Building a website (with Facebook integration) to educate Americans about life in South Africa. *Deploying the national school management database (SA-SAMS) at my secondary school. I trained 10 new computer users in basic computer literacy and operation of the database. The database was broken, so the training included how to work around the non-functioning parts of the database. *Teaching computer skills to teachers, students, and government employees. I had over 50 different pupils, and over 40 were able to competently use Windows and MS Office when I finished. I also trained a few pupils in more advanced topics, including PC repair, virus cleaning, Linux, and web design. *Opening a library and computer lab at my secondary school, and training the librarians in library operations and computer lab and PC maintenance. Lastly, I did work for the Peace Corps itself. I served on a committee that curated a collection of digital resources distributed to incoming volunteers, trained incoming volunteers in IT, local customs, the Swazi language, and English teaching, and was elected by my fellow volunteers to advise Peace Corps leadership on policy and strategy as part of the Volunteer Advocacy Committee. From July 2010 to September 2012 (2 years 3 months) Founder @ I co-founded a medical billing company. I was responsible for the administration, finance, IT, and web presence of the company. My partner was responsible for medical coding, and we shared sales responsibilities. The business was growing, but major life changes put considerable financial strain on my business partner, causing her to leave the business. Lacking the legal credential necessary to provide medical coding services, and realizing my interests lie elsewhere, I decided to wind the business down. From March 2009 to May 2010 (1 year 3 months) IT/EHR Consultant and Project Manager @ I was hired as an IT consultant to purchase, customize, and implement an Electronic Health Record/Practice Management System. When I arrived, I discovered the IT setup was woefully inadequate for a modern surgical practice. The PCs were close to 5 years old, the server alarm had been going off for months, no data was being backed up, and no network security was in place. I then overhauled the company's IT: new PCs, a new server, network security (hardware and software) and renegotiated a copier contract to get new machines that allowed for rapid scanning of old paper medical records. In the middle of my IT work, I was asked to manage the company's relocation to a new facility. I served as the primary contact and negotiator with all external contractors related to the relocation including the architect, the construction company/property manager, the phone/data system vendor, all utility companies, and all supply vendors. I also was responsible for informing 50+ government agencies, hospital, health insurance companies, and credentialing organizations of our relocation. Once we relocated, I assisted with the search for a new Practice Manager. Finally, I trained the employees on the new Electronic Health Record/Practice Management System and once it was operational, my contract came to a close. From June 2008 to July 2009 (1 year 2 months) Software Tester @ I worked as one of two testers on the PC port of Mass Effect and for Brothers in Arms: Double Time on the Nintendo Wii. On Mass Effect, my primary responsibilities were writing the 100+ page full functionality checklist, 5.1 sound testing, ensuring video card compatibility, and screening incoming bugs for completion before sending them to our engineers. I also assisted production with time tracking and resource utilization reporting, and made sure the game satisfied the Microsoft Games for Windows requirements. On Brothers in Arms: Double Time my primary responsibilities were writing bug reports and screening incoming bugs from the publisher. I also verified the success of daily builds and served as the temporary QA Lead while the QA Lead was on leave. From June 2007 to May 2008 (1 year) Greater Boston AreaAssistant to the Vice President of Finance and Administration @ Temporary position working as a personal assistant to the VP of Finance and Administration. My primary responsibility was to attend to her immediate needs including preparing presentations, scheduling meetings, computer assistance, and capturing and updating financial data. I also completed an unfinished corporate compliance project relating to the notification of bondholders and government agencies of a name change. From June 2006 to September 2006 (4 months) Greater Boston AreaField Anthropologist @ Contract position doing market research in retail locations across New England. I observed consumer behavior, made field notes, interviewed the consumers about their behavior, and submitted the data electronically. Significant travel was involved. From May 2006 to September 2006 (5 months) Software Tester / Head Tester @ I was a quality assurance tester for Guitar Hero and the French, Italian, German, and Spanish translations of Guitar Hero and Karaoke Revolution Party. All games were for the PlayStation 2. On Guitar Hero, my primary responsibility was general testing of the game. I filed more bugs than any other novice tester, wrote half of the functionality checklist for the game, and served as the tester responsible for ensuring compliance with Sony's Technical Requirements Checklist (TRC). On the European localization of Karaoke Revolution Party, my primary responsibility was ensuring the translations did not compromise the functionality of the game. I also regularly scrubbed the bug database, verified the accuracy of bugs submitted by the publisher's QA staff, supervised bugs forwarded to the translators, and wrote the translation testing checklist. I was the Head Tester for the European localization of Guitar Hero. I trained four first-time QA testers, managed the bug database, and championed a streamlining of the bug submission and verification processes that helped the project finish 15% earlier than planned. I also tracked down an imperceptible timing bug that greatly increased the playability of future iterations of the Guitar Hero franchise. From June 2005 to March 2006 (10 months) Greater Boston AreaLaboratory Aide/Software Developer @ I served as a software developer and data analyst in a laboratory studying how the brain controls movement. My primary accomplishment was designing, developing, and programming (in C++ and MATLAB), advanced statistical analysis routines to test a variety of hypotheses linking neuron firings (recorded via inserted electrode) with eye movements. The analysis routines included both traditional statistical approaches as well as more computationally intensive data mining techniques geared towards rule induction. As part of my development work, I re-engineered our primary analysis routine from 5000 lines of undocumented, sloppy MATLAB scripts into less than 1000 lines of efficiently coded components. I was also responsible for programming the computers in our lab setup (primarily in C++). Three different computers running QNX, UNIX, and Windows had to communicate seamlessly to run our experiments, with strictly-enforced timing. I was also involved with the design of the experiments and had input into the direction of the lab's work. I conducted textbook and journal research and consulted with professors and graduate students about what sort of experiments might produce publishable results. From June 2000 to June 2003 (3 years 1 month) Greater Chicago AreaInformation Center Consultant / Residential Consultant @ I provided email, phone, and in-person desktop support for both Windows and Mac OS. I specialized in the cleaning of malware, including the ILOVEYOU worm. From March 2000 to June 2001 (1 year 4 months) Greater Chicago AreaMaster of Science (MS), Business Analytics @ The University of Texas at Austin - The Red McCombs School of Business From 2013 to 2014 Bachelor of Science, Communication, General @ Northwestern University From 1999 to 2003 High School Diploma @ New Providence High School (New Jersey) From 1995 to 1999 Michael Sherman is skilled in: Research, Training, Data Analysis, Public Speaking, Project Management, Social Media, Teaching, SQL, Linux, Java, Business Intelligence, Data Science, Business Analytics, Python, R
