From January 2015 to July 2015 (7 months) Houston, Texas AreaProject Manager - RightAngle Implementation @ From December 2013 to April 2015 (1 year 5 months) Houston, Texas AreaData Visualization Engineer @ Enlink Midstream operates 9,100 miles of natural gas, natural gas liquids, and crude oil pipelines on the Gulf Coast and the Ohio River Valley. EnLink operates 16 plants that in aggregate can process natural gas at 3.6 bcf/day. EnLink is active in the liquids business as well, with seven NGL fractionators and 280,000 bbl/day net fractionation capacity. EnLink's logistics capabilities also include barge & rail terminals, product storage facilities, and an extensive truck fleet. At EnLink, I visualized data from NGL & Crude transactions to physical product flows to plant operations. EnLink's data analysis technology stack was Tableau, R, d3js, as well as some custom tools for presentation. We worked with data from Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle databases, and a variety of unstructured and time series data sources. At the margins of these systems, spreadsheet and text-wrangling tools are very useful - here we frequently used RStudio, SublimeText, Excel, Atom, and IPython Notebook. To give measurement analysts in the field insight into the quality of trucked Y-Grade product over time, I built an interactive graphic that shows historical molecular composition volume-weighted averages by geographic origin. The analyst sees a map, a chart, and a table of movements or locations that can be dynamically filtered by multiple features. Selections can be made based on any of these chart objects, and all data can be easily exported to a spreadsheet. I recently refactored the data processing pipeline for this project to so that updates can be accomplished with a single concise R script and a bit of manual geocoding. This refactoring with R reduced time to maintain this interactive tool by 96%. I was actively involved with software evaluation and selection, training and staff development, risk management, and commercial systems support. From July 2013 to April 2015 (1 year 10 months) Houston, Texas AreaRefined Products Systems Analyst @ Buckeye Partners, LP is a major wholesale distributor of petroleum products to the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Midwest United States. Buckeye markets gasoline, diesel, heating oil, kerosene, propane, ethanol and other biofuels through its 3.5 million barrel capacity terminal network. At Buckeye, I completed a contract project that migrated the back office settlements function from the trading business unit to a dedicated settlements accounting group. During this transition, I improved communication with the middle office and the quality of product movement data captured in RightAngle. These process improvements reduced month-end accruals significantly. At the request of the volume accounting manager I wrote a set of Excel Macros that generate invoices and support spreadsheets for Buckeye's fuel storage business. These Macros produced 6 staff-hours of monthly recurring time-savings. On the settlements desk, I confirmed prompt settlement of bulk sales receivable & communicated with counterparties to resolve payment issues. For rack purchases, I matched physical product movements with invoices and then tied those payments to a daily draft statement. I recorded journal entries for aggregate retail fuels credit card revenue, associated fees, and loyalty programs. At month end, I reconciled physical inventory balances at Buckeye fuel terminals with recorded balances in RightAngle. For RightAngle I developed scripts that built truck deals that from specified origin, destination, product, and pricing parameters. I created reports and wrote PowerBuilder filter expressions that allow the user to quickly focus on relevant information. From September 2012 to May 2013 (9 months) Refined Products & NGLs Systems Analyst @ Phillips 66 is an oil refining and marketing company, with significant exposure to the petrochemicals and midstream businesses via joint ventures. I managed data for wholesale refined products customers, common carriers, and distribution points for the marketing financial services business unit. I processed account setup requests for the unbranded, branded, NGL (natural gas liquids), commercial, resellers, & aviation refined products channels of trade for Phillips 66 in the continental United States. I communicated frequently with counterparts at major oil companies, distribution companies, customers, fuel carriers, and field locations. Using proprietary SAP modules and reporting tools I managed terminal access and customer records. I am conversant with proprietary Phillips 66 and third-party terminal automation systems. I used software tools to script, automate, and streamline manual processes. My process improvement efforts resulted in significant cost savings, time savings, and error reduction. I championed and implemented a process improvement that reduced customer wait times and eliminated transaction costs of more than $870k per year. From April 2011 to June 2012 (1 year 3 months) Master Data Analyst - Global Application Integration Project @ ConocoPhillips is an oil & gas exploration and production company. I performed fieldwork for an operational audit of SAP middleware. I conducted user acceptance testing for product movement data feeds translated by SAP Process Integration (PI). I worked closely with business unit management and my developer counterpart in application services to refine the user acceptance test processes. I liased between the software development team and marketing financial services, my functional business unit. I reconciled test data produced by PI to the same period production data from the legacy middleware tool. My analysis of the wholesale fuels transaction data identified an opportunity to improve the PI logic to correctly interpret credit / re-bill transaction sequences. I initiated a new automated batch testing process that eliminated 48 project-hours from the user acceptance testing program. I created a quantitative reporting tool to measure the user-acceptance testing process and identify areas where further testing would beneficial. From January 2011 to April 2011 (4 months) Corporate Accounting Intern @ Alliance Resource Partners, LP is a diversified coal producer and marketer. Alliance products both steam and metallurgical coal, and is active in the Illinois Basin, Central Appalachia, and Northern Appalachia regions in the United States. At Alliance, I implemented a document imaging process. I scanned and verified historical general ledger journals, and aided in the accounting function’s transition to paperless office. As an intern I worked with a number of professionals on a variety of projects. I proofread quarterly SEC filings. I assisted in the preparation of coal severance tax returns for state and county governments in Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia. I performed bank reconciliations, and researched outstanding checks. I organized records of company board meetings for the vice president for accounting. Under the direction of the CFO-emeritus, I conducted due diligence work for acquisition prospects. I initiated a project to scan historical tax returns and workpapers for the internal tax group at Alliance. Working with a tax manager, I entered tax depreciation information for new fixed assets into the Oracle Fixed Assets module. I recorded changes in fixed assets financial reporting. I completed various special projects for clerical staff, tax manager, revenue accounting manager, manager of corporate accounting, and controller. This variety of activities and high level of involvement with staff from across the company taught me much about the accounting, finance, and marketing functions of a publicly traded master limited partnership. I validated a list of US private equity firms to support the marketing efforts of CCK’s mergers & acquisitions unit. I prepared Oklahoma franchise tax returns. I did supporting research for tax professionals at the firm. I imported client information into a document management system. From May 2009 to July 2009 (3 months) Tulsa, Oklahoma AreaAccounting Staff @ Until 2004 a unit of paper products giant Georgia-Pacific, Bluelinx is the largest distributor of construction materials in the United States. During my time at the Tulsa distribution center, I performed daily billing activities and a weekly accounts payable process. I was responsible for petty cash, a purchasing card, and payroll records. I researched old invoices, shipped and stock received goods daily, and wrote bills of lading for outgoing orders. I maintained department of transportation-mandated driver safety records. Working with the distribution center manager, I analyzed the branch’s relationship with a railroad vendor over a four year historical period. My research led to a negotiated settlement that saved Bluelinx approximately $40,000 in incorrectly billed demurrage charges. I participated in an annual physical inventory of the distribution center, working with the warehouse staff to accurately count product in the facility. I responded to requests from customers and vendors. I communicated local information to and took direction from off-site Bluelinx sales, marketing, accounting, and transportation logistics staff. When I identified discrepancies, I verified transactions with source documents. In addition to my primary responsibilities, I also maintained vendor tax identification records in JD Edwards Enterprise. This task consisted of source document research, queries in JD Edwards Enterprise, and direct interaction with vendors.
