About Matthew Hutchinson

📖 Summary

I enjoy creating things and helping people solve real problems with technology. I've been working with the web (in one form or another) since 1998. My passion lies in programming, digging deep into problems, understanding systems, and making sense of big data. Aside from developing software I have experience in technical project management, system administration and user interface design. After working as a web developer for a number of successful firms, I eventually founded Hiddenloop Ltd. (2006) - allowing me to work with a wide range of clients on small and large scale projects. With Hiddenloop, I aim to provide quality, accessible websites and web applications, that are both easy to use and maintain. I take pride in building aesthetically pleasing sites to the best of my ability, and using minimal code and markup. As a technical project manager, I have proven experience in overseeing the technical aspect of small and large scale projects (usually teams of 5 developers or less), from conception through to final delivery and on-going maintenance. I apply agile methods and adopt the principles of 'Getting Real' (37 Signals) promoting simple, un-bloated software and processes. As a developer I am always looking for new challenges, diving into unfamiliar code to solve problems or building applications from the ground up in a new language. Specialties: Ruby, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, NodeJS, Rails, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Bash, Unix/LinuxSenior Software Developer @ HouseTrip is a holiday rental website where you can find, book or list your holiday apartment easily and securely. Key projects I have delivered so far include; destination based landing pages, 4 additional languages, re-building our location based search, site-wide performance improvements, SEO optimizations, host calendar management (with iCal syncing) and mobile API for a new iOS app. Aside from programming, I help architect new features, make key technical decisions and ensure code quality is upheld as our development team and feature set grows. I have also had the freedom to choose web technologies and tools that I believe, best suit the customers needs. I take pride in the work I do and enjoy the challenge each new project brings.
