About Matt B.

📖 Summary

I am a web developer excited to make beautiful and engaging things that also effect positive social change. While working at a software company fresh out of college, I learned to program in RPG by looking at the source and debugging. Realizing that there wasn't much of a future in RPG, I started teaching myself Ruby and fell completely in love with programming. Inspired by the power and beauty of a well-designed app, I went to Dev Bootcamp to learn how to build one in a systematic way. After learning so much at DBC, I can't wait to contribute and continue growing as part of a software team. I am meticulous about the aesthetics of my code and genuinely enjoy refactoring. I'm trained in Rails and Javascript, but I'm open to and excited about learning other technologies -- one of my favorite parts of programming is the process of spiking a new tech. I'm particularly interested in data visualization and AI, and as a former student of psychology, I'd also like to learn more about UX. I'd love to chat with other members of the community, about code or otherwise. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] Engineer @ From October 2015 to Present (3 months) Web Development Student @ Completed a 19-week intensive web development program, in which I learned to develop apps using Ruby on Rails and Javascript while emphasizing algorithmic thinking, test-driven development, DRY object-oriented code, and Model-View-Controller architecture. I also practiced working effectively with a team using empathetic communication, agile methodologies and proper Git workflow. Pitched an idea that was selected as a capstone project (Pollarity), and led a team to execute it in 8 days. I learned a lot about being a leader and am incredibly proud of what we built. From April 2015 to September 2015 (6 months) Software Engineer, Technical Lead @ As a software engineer at SunGard, I maintained existing code and developed new software using the latest techniques in RPG programming. I experienced the challenges that come with working on legacy code with minimal documentation and learned how to work through them. As a Technical Lead, a position I rose to after 8 months in the department, I was responsible for designing new software and fixes for existing code while maintaining the functional integrity and performance of the system. I also learned how to debug production code on client systems and devise a solution to the bug once it was found. Finally, I got valuable experience providing third-level on-call support for one of SunGard's market data distribution products. From July 2013 to May 2015 (1 year 11 months) Application Support Specialist @ As Traffic Controller, a position to which I rose after only 9 months in the department, I helped manage the GMI Help Desk by researching and assigning problem tickets to colleagues in Client Services. After volunteering to work the late shift for 8 months, I gained critical expertise in areas that only become important outside of normal hours, such as market data dissemination, end-of-day processing, and regulatory reporting. Without training, I became proficient with RPG programming and debugging, developing and maintaining several custom programs for clients. This led to my eventual promotion to the development team. I also wrote documentation and gave training courses to new hires on one of the products in which I became an expert. From September 2011 to June 2013 (1 year 10 months) Team Lead/Dispatch Computing Assistant @ As a Dispatch Computing Assistant, I made a lasting contribution to the organization by building an internal website for use by Residential Computing personnel. The site provided valuable reference material for new staff members working in the field, much of which I wrote from scratch. I quickly became a Team Lead and was tasked with managing a team of five student IT workers. I successfully oversaw a project to reprogram the electronic locks in a new dormitory after the deployment was botched by the vendor. My more basic responsibilities included installing new computer and server hardware in University buildings and assisting University staff with assorted technology issues. From September 2008 to August 2010 (2 years) Dev Bootcamp From 2015 to 2015 Bachelor of Arts, Comparative Human Development and Psychology, 3.69 @ University of Chicago From 2007 to 2011 Matt B. is skilled in: Ruby, Rails, Javascript, Object-oriented design, Test-driven development, Agile development, jQuery, RESTful conventions, RSpec, Capybara, Jasmine, Databases, AJAX, SQL, PostgreSQL
