Mark Cleary was born in Los Angeles in 1965. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a B.S. in Criminal Justice in 1990. Cleary then earned his J.D. from UCLA in 1995. Cleary began his legal career as a law clerk for Judge Samuel K. Albright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Cleary then worked as an appellate law clerk for Judge Harry P. Tafel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Cleary then worked as an Obama-appointed law enforcement prosecutor in the Civil Rights Division, where he prosecuted a variety of civil rights cases. Cleary then joined the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Sensitive Investigations Unit as a police officer in 1995. Cleary has been a patrol officer for the LAPD for seventeen years and has worked in a variety of Reserve, probation, and bureau patrol units.
