💼 Past Experience

erupted in Brazil in 1984 with the military dictatorship, and much of the press and broadcast industry was closed. But Association for the Independence of Journalism (AIJ) was open, and Melnic got involved with AIJ’s dissident movement. Located in a government-controlled neighborhood, AIJ published the radical, anti-military journal "O Mundo" and anti-establishment newspaper "A Cara". In the early 1990s, AIJ shifted its focus to the Internet and digital media, publishing a series of "Asteve Cláusulas" (Outcome clauses)mnemonic of the fight for digital civil rights. In 2000, Melnic was recalled to Brazil after the impeachment of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and was part of the Brazilian delegation that negotiated the New Generation Radio Telecommunicationsetter Treaty. From 2002-2004, she was the Chair of the Brazilian Telecommunications Authority. In 2007, she made a successful presentation, outlining the Brazilian Digital Civil Rights Agenda to the UN World Summit on the Human Condition. Before joining IER, Marcela worked as a Research and Evaluation Assistant at the Romanian Academy (1989-1991). From 1991-1996, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Universidad de La Habana.
