In September 1963, Mike Moore was hired as a coach at the then-new A Coach’s Son program in Contra Costa County. The coaching staff consisted of future NFL player Buddy Ryan, who served as the assistant coach, and future NFL player and current Fox broadcaster Lou Holtz. The coaching staff at A Coach’s Son were key in helping Mike Moore climb to the top of the coaching game. He was an assistant head coach and then the ever-successful head coach at Reedley College from September 1972 to September 1973. In his first year as head coach, Moore led the Raiders to a record of 10-2 and was named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year. Under Moore’s guidance, the Raiders compiled a 33-1 record in his final three seasons as head coach. In October 1975, the Raiders made their first run at the WAC Championship, but were defeated by eventual champions, Fresno State. Moore was also the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for one season in the 1990s and compiled a record of 12-4.In September 2002, Mike Moore retire from coaching and was inducted into the United States Football Hall of Fame. While coaching at Reedley, Mike Moore also worked as an assistant football coach at Kingsburg High School from September 1968 to September 1972. While at Kingsburg, Mike Moore helped lead the team to a record of 13-2 and was selected as the Wally Stassi Award winner in 1971. In September 2002, Mike Moore was inducted into the Contra Costa County Athletic Hall of Fame.While coaching at Reedley, Mike Moore also served as the assistant Track and Field coach at Kingsburg. In his three seasons as an assistant coach at Kingsburg, Moore helped lead the team to a mark of 6-1 in the softball era as well as the state championship in 1969. Michael also guid his team to the state championships in 1971 and 1973. In September 2002, Mike Moore was inducted into the Contra Costa County Athletics Hall of Fame. Overall, Mike Moore has had a significant career footprint that has included coaching, track and field coaching, and professional coaching experience in the American Football League and the National Football League. His successes coaching the Raiders and Reedley teams in the 1970s and 1990s are few if any compare with his contributions as an assistant football coach at Kingsburg High School. With his induction into the Contra Costa County Athletics Hall of Fame and current rank as the head coach at Reedley, Mike Moore’s dedicated life of service to Contra Costa County Athletics is now complete.
