Proud to be associated with the Cape Town 2014 World Design Capital designation. My Motto: "Design is a collective discipline, driven by individual excellence". My practice of Architecture has reaffirmed my passion for Design and the recognition of the importance of integrated design, both in terms of design disciplines and the contribution of others in the design process.
Most importantly, socially responsible design has become central to our work. Recent experiences, and my most successful work have confirmed the positive role design can play to change people's lives, reaching beyond the conventional understanding of architecture & design, being 'limited to creating beautiful objects" only! Architecture covers a wide range of experiences - from the most sophisticated spaces to the simplest - we must cover them all.
The African lifestyle & experience is of specific interest, given that it has not found space in the 'accepted architectural language and expressions'. It is time that Architecture embraces African forms, indigenous building technologies/knowledge, spatial qualities and architectural idiom as part of the normal discourse and education of Architects. Hence my often expressed view to 'promote African Inspired Design'! In this way I believe, we can speak of a truly sustainable Architecture in the African context, embracing all the diverse architectural experiences, lifestyles, urban/rural conditions and cultures, locally & elsewhere.
My vision in architectural practice includes the ideal to promote "Design for Social Change" and I wish to play a part to see this being recognised. Beyond the work we do in practice, while servicing the architectural commissions we get from our most respected clients diligently, I wish to associate with design practitioners, thinkers and professionals - locally and internationally - who share in the vision outlined above, to make Architecture accessible and for the Continent to develop a new generation of Architects,.
