About Kyle Ambroff-Kao

📖 Summary

**I’m really good at these things** Even on a team of strong generalists, my colleagues would probably look to me to drive this aspect of a project as they consider me an expert in the following: - C++ - Python - AWS - Release Management - Build systems (GNU Make, Autotools, CMake, Maven, etc.) - Server - Software Architecture and API Design - Full-stack understanding, awareness of interactions between components across layers - Concurrency (threads, locks, semaphores, etc.) - Systems (low-level understanding of the machine and the OS) - Distributed Systems - Databases - Caching - Operations and Site Reliability (SRE) - Linux Systems, especially Linux servers (architecture, tools, history, packaging) - Performance, Productivity (build systems, continuous integration, deployment) - Testing (unit, integration, functional, especially legacy code) - Reusable Libraries, Compilers and Code Generators - Cross-platform Development (Boost, GTK+) - Cassandra, MySQL - Network programming / sockets **I have experience with these things** I have quite a bit of production experience with the following, although I am not sure I'm much better than the average generalist. - C# - Java - Go - Clojure - Algorithms - Networking - People Management - Corporate Culture - Security - Puppet - Chef **I’m kinda OK at these things** For the following things, I have learned some of the basics but I’m still a beginner. I can do this kind of work, but I’m probably not good enough to drive this aspect of the project until I’ve had more experience. - Rust - Haskell - Erlang - Ruby - Product vision - Product management - Project management - Visual Design - UX Design - WEB Client - iOS Client - Android Client - Machine LearningSenior Site Reliability Engineer @ Something something Kafka, Samza and Zookeeper. Current status: http://i.imgur.com/uv5VX0g.gif From June 2015 to Present (7 months) San Francisco Bay AreaPrincipal Software Engineer @ Lead Infrastructure team. We made shit not so shitty. I came in through acquisition of Massive Health and built the team from the ground up, which eventually absorbed the Operations team, which was originally a part of the IT department. We turned a brittle, monolithic, old-school application with a small number of users into a fully-modern, automated (deployment, configuration and testing), SOA system that scaled to big numbers (users and computers). The huge architectural changes we made were responsible for Jawbone's increased uptime, and hilariously, lead to the first Christmas morning without any service disruption. Turns out everyone turns on their shiny new electronic gifts at the same time, which leads to interesting traffic burst scenarios that are difficult to test. Helped architect and build a system for computing real-time, streaming aggregations which is now the backbone of most of UP's smart content, personalized data analysis, and trends features. From December 2012 to December 2014 (2 years 1 month) San Francisco Bay AreaJanitor @ Development and maintenance for our kinda popular app called The Eatery. It's not available anymore, but we got some really cool data out of it. http://data.massivehealth.com/ R&D for our next product, which was never announced but was continued when we were acquired by Jawbone. From March 2012 to December 2012 (10 months) Saucier @ Making Formspring scale for fewer $$$. From March 2011 to February 2012 (1 year) Software Engineer @ I worked on pretty much everything during my tenure at Linden Lab, both client and server side. Here are some example contributions: * Optimization of the object and geometry pipeline. * Performance and scaling work across the board, on both the client and server. Optimizing C++, Python and PHP code, proprietary network protocols, and melting MySQL databases. * Maintenance of LSL, the scripting system for Second Life, as well contributing to the initial support of C#. * Maintenance and enhancements for third party libraries, such as Mono, Greenlet, Eventlet and Mulib. * Python bindings for Kakadu, the JPEG2000 library for C++. * Second Life Enterprise * Server side baked avatar texture pipeline. * I wrote the auto-updater for the Linux port of the client software. * Debian packaging and software for system imaging and deployment. * General release engineering. From April 2008 to March 2011 (3 years) Systems Software Developer @ Developing .NET software to support KioskFrame, our platform for developing software for the self serve economy. Also provided business model consulting for clients. From March 2007 to September 2007 (7 months) PHP Programmer @ We are developing a courseware management system called LOCUS, which is similar to moddle, blackboard and webct. It is currently used by about 90 classes at the University. It was developed in PHP using the MySQL database. We will eventually release it as free software. Duties included profiling existing applications and modifying them to improve performance and scalability, and re-designing some portions of the site to improve accessibility. From January 2007 to May 2007 (5 months) Programmer @ Developing an Information Security Management System based on OSSIM (http://www.ossim.net).
