Head of Analytics & Data Visualisation @ I'm the Head of Analytics & Data Visualisation within Digital Insights, a part of UK Consulting.
We make a concerted effort to be technology 'agnostic', utilising the appropriate tools and scale for each client's needs - this can range from a simple review of a clients systems and providing recommendations to a fully managed service provided by CGI.
This allows us to be flexible, matching our approach to the needs of anyone we work with.
I'm currently working with multiple clients in both the public and private sector helping to progress their digital strategy.
This includes the following;
> Providing consultation on Enterprise architecture using TOGAF methodologies
> Developing Big Data strategies and providing capabilities, enabling insight derived from publicly available data that's married up with the clients own internal data cache's across multiple departments/divisions.
> Consulting on the use of Open Data and Social Media as an analytical data source, providing the tools to do so.
> Enacting data consolidation and cleansing workflows into an OLAP optimised data mart/warehouse, building advanced analytical frameworks on top.
> Providing quick reactive BI and MI solutions for immediate answers to business questions and challenges
> Consulting on the release of private data into the public domain and how this will be achieved technologically, legally and economically - this includes turning the data into a revenue stream by providing it as a subscription service.
> Extending current BI capability with interactive visualisation technology, replacing traditional reporting output.
> Providing Data Science services, allowing for 'black box' machine learning to be utilised where applicable, as well as one off scientific investigations into possible data trends and patterns.
> 'Horizon Scanning' services, consulting on upcoming technologies, trends and sources of data with a view to integrating those that provide value on a client by client basis. From September 2015 to Present (2 months) London, United KingdomSenior Business Consultant @ I was initially engaged to work on a Business Intelligence solution attached to Microsoft Dynamics AX2012r2 for Assa Abloy - a global manufacturing company who have begun replaced their primary ERP solution across the entire group. The country this was being deployed to was Finland, and I had been working both onsite in Joensuu and offsite in the UK.
My role was as the lead developer for CGI staff embedded within the Business Intelligence team, co-ordinating the efforts of our developers and business analysts with that of the clients. As a secondary objective I was tasked with improving the relationship between the client and CGI's Digital Insight division.
This was a resounding success with a 6 week contract to build a selection of SSAS cubes being extended to 9 months in Finland, with members of my team embedded at the client to this day rolling out the same solution out across the EMEA region.
Following this, the client began the process of going live with the new ERP in Finland, so my mandate shifted to help transition between testing and production wherever possible. I worked closely with the various business functions to tailor our business intelligence offering to meet their needs.
Due to my positive relationship with the client I was tasked with creating BI output for their BIM (Building Information Modelling) solution (at the request of Assa Abloy's EMEA IT leadership).
This involved working with in-house programme managers and infrastructure architects to design an integrated EMEA wide BI solution - taking a customer centric top down approach using TOGAF to govern the architecture process. The finished solution will utilise Microsoft SQL Server BI stack and Microsoft Power BI once the transitional steps I outlined to the client as part of my consultation have been followed.
My final project was working with not for profit organisation UK Sport, helping prepare their BI solution ahead of the Rio Olympics next year. From June 2014 to September 2015 (1 year 4 months) London, United KingdomSenior BI Developer @ One of three senior developers on a team of 6, working with MS SQL Server 2012 Enterprise edition and the full MSSQL BI Stack. This was supplemented by Tableau for user driven BI, as well as Power Pivot and Power View for Office 2013.
The team was primarily working on creating a greenfield data warehouse solution, drawing data in from XML feeds, MySQL, MSSQL, MSMQ feeds, web scrapes and 3rd party csv drops. This also includes integrating an existing multi-terabyte MSSQL data repository and cleaning it up into a full dimensional model.
I was also involved in steering the IT strategy and investigating our usage of 'big data' too, implementing cubes in analysis services and data warehouse design using Kimble methodology, as well as leveraging the power of the newer BI tech such as tabular model ssas and columnstore indexing. This is with the goal of creating a strategic data mart solution for the whole business in mind. I also was involved in developing a system utilising Hadoop to enhance our string data analysis potential and trending capability when leveraging data from our own data store, that of our sister companies in the group, and information already in the public domain (specifically, Social Media output),
I was able to help shape the technological landscape of an enterprise organisation, giving the end user there data in the most accessible yet controllable way possible.
I also acheived an MCSA in SQL Server 2012 and an MCSE in SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence. From November 2013 to June 2014 (8 months) Manchester, United KingdomBI Developer @ Business Intelligence developer for the Specialist Businesses within the Co-op group, utilising the Microsoft SQL Server BI stack.
I was involved extensively in connecting disparate database architectures together, acting as designer of the overall solution and then working with other developers (both in house and 3rd party), splitting the resulting development work between those involved to expedite delivery. I enjoy the challenge of creating a design that bridges a very wide technological gap, and like to 'get stuck in' with the real deep coding design and optimisation side as well as SSIS package design.
I worked very closely with 3rd party's, project staff, support staff and key business representatives also to ensure that the developments made are in line with the requirements laid out at the start in real terms, often acting as technical lead on project work too.
I have expanded my experience to include Strategic System Architecture & Infrastructure design - designing the high level configurations for the next iterations of several applications used in the business and acting as a technical consultant for Business Analysts and Project Managers when planning the next steps. From December 2011 to November 2013 (2 years) Manchester, United KingdomTechnical Analyst @ Technical Analyst responsible for designing, maintaining, implementing and supporting technical solutions and projects undertaken by IS. I support the Specialist Retail, Commercial and Sunwin businesses (11 in all). This included several larger entities such as Co-operative Legal Services and Co-operative Funerals. Later on I was assigned specifically to Co-operative Legal Services and was heavily involved in the project to start up the new Family Law business.
Typically my role involved optimising MS SQL DB’s using a variety of methods (indexing, query optimisation etc.), designing MS SQL and .net based solutions for interfacing disparate systems, management information and business intelligence, as well as server application management, managing UAT/development environments, 3rd line BAU and project support, system monitoring and providing advice for my peers as a technical authority.
I work with the following programming languages/setups;
Transact SQL, C#, VB, UNIX (Sun Solaris Ksh and IBM AIX), Dos batch, FTP, SFTP, OpenEdge/Progress SQL
I worked with and supported the following platforms/technologies;
MS SQL Server 05/08/08r2, Windows Server 03/08/08r2, Windows XP, Windows 7, Active Directory, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 & GP (Backend and DB support).
I'm a MCTS in SQL Server 2005 & 2008 and an MCITP DBA in SQL Server 2008.
