Summary:From August 1999 to July 2003, Kim Beinborn was a Guidance Counselor at Verona Area School District in Verona, Wisconsin. From July 2017 to August 2018, she was the Head of Customer Success at Outcome Health in Greater Chicago Area. When Kim Beinborn started her academic career as a graduate student in psychology at Edgewood College in 2013, she had no idea that she would one day become a world-renowned expert on autism.But that's exactly what Beinborn has become, performing major work in the field as a professor of psychology, author, and workshop leader at leading universities around the world.OBJECTIVES:One of the primary purposes of this research is to explore the factors that influence an individual's readiness for doctoral-level work in the field of psychology.METHODOLOGY:The data were collected from self- nominations of academic work completed in the United States and internationally. The worked-on work was judged on a scale from 1 (not ready to continue work) to 5 (fully prepared for doctoral work).RESULTS:The study found that university professors and research staff had a significant impact on an individual's readiness for doctoral-level work in the field of psychology. Faculty who fostered a community of scholars who shared research interests and worked through disagreements to build a better understanding of each other were more likely to be Prepared for Doctoral Work. Faculty who made working with new colleagues a key part of their professorial mission were also more likely to be Prepared for Doctoral Work.CONCLUSIONS:The data suggest that the key factor intervening in an individual's readiness for doctoral-level work in the field of psychology is the community of scholars that an individual meets while they are attending college. Faculty who share research interests, work together to build a better understanding of each other, and make working with new colleagues a key part of their professorial mission are more likely to be Prepared for Doctoral Work.
