Head of Data Science @ The Policy Lab Lead data science for a new center for state and local government at Brown University. We're bringing together governments, universities, and community organizations to improve policies and programs across the state and around the world. Providence, Rhode Island AreaSenior Data Scientist @ The Lab @ DC The Lab @ DC is a new office in the Office of the City Administrator in the DC city government. Our goal is to bring the best that social science and data science can offer into local governments. My role is to exploit administrative data to build predictive models which can help make government programs more effective and efficient, build up our technical infrastructure (especially around data security), and consult on thornier mathematical problems especially related to machine learning algorithms and randomization. From January 2017 to December 2018 (2 years) Washington D.C. Metro AreaConsultant @ Self-Employed Paid the rent with a few technical projects, but my main gig was overseeing Microsoft's TEALS' program remote teaching program for computer science. This involved training around 30 teams of volunteers and high school teachers around the country in the most effective methods for teaching computer science in a remote setting, as well as visiting schools from the end of the Number 4 train in the Bronx to the apple orchards of Eastern Washington. From October 2016 to December 2016 (3 months) Greater New York City AreaPrincipal Data Scientist @ Knewton Much the same as my previous responsibilities as a Data Scientist, but more in the direction of shaping and coordinating Knewton's research program among its many-more-than-when-I-started data scientists and data analysts. From May 2014 to May 2016 (2 years 1 month) Greater New York City AreaData Scientist @ Knewton Working with a bunch of really smart people to build a recommendation engine for online education. Involves various tasks from the mundane (ETL on AWS with EMR, code speedups in Python and Java, even at times helping maintain our code review and continuous integration systems) to the profound (data analysis, model development and comparisons, developing new and testing old algorithms on an extremely interesting data set). From August 2012 to May 2014 (1 year 10 months) Greater New York City AreaData Science Mentor @ Data Science for Social Good Oversaw 14 grad students, postdocs, and undergrads in taking administrative data from school systems, prosecutors, water utilities, and other government agencies and turning it into actionable models for those agencies. We built models which helped allocate resources to students most at risk of dropping out of school or failing critical exams, students most at risk of entering the criminal justice system, and water pipes that were most likely to leak.In the broader program, I taught on ongoing series on advanced Python development practices and gave several other lectures on programming techniques and the history of education funding in the US. Also helped maintain the AWS infrastructure we used for the program. From May 2016 to September 2016 (5 months) Greater Chicago Area
