I then attended the University of Notre Dame where I received my J.D. in 1987. I then moved to New York City and got my law degree from George New York Law School in 1990. I worked as an insurance policy agent for National Life Insurance Company in New York City from 1990-1993. I then moved to San Carlos University of Guatemala where I became an Assistant Professor of Sociology in 1993. I then became a full-time Professor of Sociology at San Carlos University of Guatemala from January 2003 to November 2008. I was also a part-time Pastor at the Iglesia Principe de paz from September 1997-December 2016.

Jose Chua's education and work readiness began in his twenties as an undergraduate at San Carlos University of Guatemala, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Chua then moved on to earn a Master's degree in Economics from the same school before concluding his education with a Master's degree in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.Chua has since taught economics at Houghton College, UC Berkeley, and San Jose State University.
