About Jolyon Wharton

πŸ“– Summary

I’ve spent the last 20 years online. It started with JANet, through dial-up to now so even in the middle of nowhere I’m still online. Developing complex line of business applications using internet technologies is hearth and home for me. There is a drive in me to code and I can never see a day when this will change. Creating software that fits the requirement, is beautifully crafted and arrives on time is a joyous feeling. As I've become a little more management focused and I really like that idea of perfect systems, software, being created by imperfect systems, us. Process can help with this and XP has been a great aide to me, as was a mentor that taught me to make processes small and hidden, preferably in tools. However I think it goes further than this and trying dissect the thought processes one uses as one develops you can really start to understand the β€˜imperfect system', interesting stuff. Specialties: ● .Net Development 1 - 4.5 ● Transactional Systems ● Loosely coupled web technologies ● Business Process Management ● TDD ● DDD and BDD ● Patterns and OO Design ● Enterprise Architecture ● RDBMS Design and Development, especially with ORMs ● Team Management (line management duties) ● Mentoring ● Technical management and governanceSoftware Engineer @ Building stuff From October 2015 to Present (2 months) Senior Software Engineer @ This was back to the sharp end of development in a delivery focused team. The Arc project is a critical project for Clarksons that replaces a number of key aging application. It covers the complete business process of the shipping brokerage from initial estimations to completed fixtures. In the rush to provided the business with solutions some of the application design has suffered and therefore the vast majority of the work was refactoring to reduced the cost of ownership and create a better code base for the next person to work with. During my time there here are some of the things I achieved: ● Remove EDMX and move domain model to dedicated project (150 classes, thousands of references) ● Move as much service logic out the controllers to services. ● Remove as many code smells as possible (mainly god classes, arrow code, a few methods over 1500 lines) ● Introduce Jasmine testing into the Angular application ● Introduce good practice to the team, KISS, YAGNI and particularly DRY ● Introduce SOLID particularly the use of role based interfaces From May 2015 to September 2015 (5 months) Senior Software Engineer @ This was my first contract in the 3rd sector and totally different to anything I'd done previously. Spanning multiple project in completely different business areas I got the opportunity play, assesses, recommend lots of technologies. Then once tech became approved by us as a team, implement projects and use the stuff in anger. Previously I've never done this over so many greenfield projects, it was a real joy. Here's some of stuff I got up to in my time at CRUK: ● Introduce multiple frameworks previous used, including Angular, Automapper, SpecFlow, WebApi ● Research and recommend new technologies including NodeJs, OData ● Capture requirements directly from user, using BDD ● Migrate Projects from Fitness to SpecFlow ● Assist in the delivery of Stratified Medicine project (matching tumor gene sequences to medications) ● Create Gene matching algorithm for the Stratified Medicine project ● Produce a architectural template using Kendo, Angular, WebApi, Automapper projection and EF6 ● Deliver Ticketing System to Finance help desk using the same template ● Deliver Portfolio Management System to Relationship Management again with the template ● Look at some of the 'scrum buts' in the team pragmatically and remove any issues ● Introduce XP values and present across multiple teams ● Expound the benefits of moving to continuous deployment via continuous delivery ● Integrate ServiceNow into delivery process via custom middleware using RabbitMQ and PS scripts ● Try encourage cross team communications in a manor comfortable to geeks From February 2014 to April 2015 (1 year 3 months) London, United KingdomTechnical Lead @ This was a hugely talented team to be involved with and I'm glade I had the chance to lead them. We had a 4 month deadline to create a set of trading tools to be integrated with the book keeping platform they had bought from LVS. This enabled BetClearer to hedge bets, override pricing and agent management. These are the sorts of things I acheived: ● Introduce and maintain TDD across the whole project, proper red/green, including Jasime ● Implement a disconnected front end using AngularJS, local storage and Web API ● Create a mocking objects for testing EF5 with FakeItEasy ● Mentor the whole team, including the dev manager ● Introduce planning poker ● Create a really lovely architecture with DDD at the heart of it ● Deliver on time, to budget with the agreed feature set ● Ensure standards didn't slip even when the pressure was on From May 2013 to December 2013 (8 months) London, United KingdomTech Lead @ This was a huge project to lead and a mammoth task to get products to market. At the point I joined the team SIS were in the process of relocating to Manchester, the project had been running a number of years and had already binned one code base. The out going tech lead didn't like object oriented code and the new code base was quickly heading for the rocks. Here's some of the things I managed to do: ● Build a transition team to deliver the product for client revue quickly ● Migrate development support systems, away from things like Perforce to things like SVN ● Remove inappropriate use of StoreQ to AAA unit testing and refactor code to make it more 'unit' testable ● Implement a hierarchical conditional state machine to control meeting/events through race cards, day of racing and resulting ● Create environments to support dev/QA/UAT ● Reengineer repositories to manipulate the NHibernate session to control the SQL write sequence ● Build on top of an Oracle implementation not flexible to change ● Get 4 out of 6 products live ● Build and mentor a permanent team capable of taking it to the next level ● Improve development process and communication ● Implement a culture of continuous code reviewing From January 2011 to May 2013 (2 years 5 months) Senior .Net Developer @ Building Silverlight mapping and line of business application for the FT. Extending Open Source projects, selecting best of breed OO Designs patterns and frameworks From August 2010 to January 2011 (6 months) Head of Development @ I was there for two reasons; improve the output and find someone to replace me. Improvement came from better communication and process but also actual coding and hands on mentoring. The development team are a great bunch and really open to all the change that was put in place. Some of the big achievements were: ● Creating an IoC and State Machine to run on ● Implementing a mentor program ● Creating a Technical Design Authority for governance From June 2009 to August 2010 (1 year 3 months) Software Engineer and Agile Consultant @ I really enjoyed my time leading the R.E.X. project at Live Nation. The project was tight as it had to be there for the festival season. I got to learn load and make an impression on the team as a whole. Stuff I got done while I as there: ● Introduction of unit tests in problematic areas ● Introduction of Kanban boards ● Getting it live for May the 4th (Jedi) From February 2009 to May 2009 (4 months) Technical Lead @ Design and implement marketing, asset exploitation and campaign management software, support supply chain mangament software From February 2008 to January 2009 (1 year) Senior Software Developer @ BPM system, MI across mutliple sites, requirement capture and user management. From June 2007 to February 2008 (9 months) Application Architect @ Specify, design and implement custodial risk management system, internet, ecommerce, internet site, intranet, development methodologies and DR From August 2004 to June 2007 (2 years 11 months) Sotfware Development Executive @ Design and implement centralised online automotive servicing, procurement and fleet management software.
