📖 Summary
I am a corporate communications professional with nearly a decade’s experience remaking internal and executive communications for global companies, as well as 17 years experience in daily journalism with major news outlets. My work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Reader's Digest, the American Spectator, the Washington Monthly, National Review, the New Republic and many other places. I am also the author of three books: John F. Kennedy on Leadership (AMACOM Books; 2005); Ulysses S. Grant on Leadership (Prima Forum, 2001); and Irish-American Landmarks: A Traveler's Guide (Gale, 1995). I have also contributed chapters and articles to The Encyclopedia of the Irish in America (University of Notre Dame Press, 1999); Presidential Administration Profiles for Students (Gale Research, 1999); and the chapters on Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee in The Art of War: Great Commanders of the Modern World Since 1600 (Quercus, 2009).Executive Writer, Global Media @ As Executive Speechwriter, I support the face-to-face communication needs of His Highness Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin ThenayanAl-Saud, chairman of the Board of SABIC and Acting CEO Yousef Abdullah Al-Benyan and his direct reports. From January 2015 to Present (1 year) Director, Executive Communications @ I supported senior BP executives in their face-to-face communications activities, including Group Chief Executive Bob Dudley, Upstream Chief Executive Lamar McKay, and BP America Chairman and President John Minge. I also led the Editorial Services Office within US Communications. In addition to writing speeches, I led executive communications planning in the US for senior BP executives, selecting venues and assessing speech effectiveness. I also have developed and implemented a speech tracking system for all BP employees making external presentations in the US. A number of my speeches have been recognized with Cicero Awards for excellence in speechwriting by Vital Speeches of the Day, where a number of them have also been published. From November 2008 to January 2015 (6 years 3 months) Director, Executive Communications @ I supported the CEO and other senior executives in preparing their speeches, presentations, op-eds and other face-to-face and written communications. Unfortunately, I was downsized from this position after only a few months. From June 2007 to February 2008 (9 months) Asst. Director, Communications @ I worked as part of two small teams focused on transforming Pfizer’s internal and executive communications functions into strategic platforms designed to support corporate messaging needs and business goals. • We replaced a quarterly employee magazine with an Intranet-based system providing real-time international and inter-divisional reach; • As part of a two-man team, took a reactive, order-taking executive speechwriting model and reconstructed it as a proactive system that supports business objectives by maximizing impact of executive time spent on communication; • I researched and wrote major speeches, presentations, op-eds and letters for C-suite executives, including chairmen and CEOs Hank McKinnell and Jeff Kindler. From July 1999 to May 2007 (7 years 11 months) Editorial Page Writer @ I reported and wrote editorials on city government at the height of Rudy Giuliani's mayoralty. From March 1996 to June 1999 (3 years 4 months) National Economic Reporter @ I covered the stock market during the start of its roaring climb in the 1990's. From January 1995 to March 1996 (1 year 3 months) Deputy Editorial Page Editor @ I got to work at the right hand of Thomas J. Bray, not only one of the great newspaper editors of our time, but one of the great human beings. I thought Detroit was a fabulous news town and Michigan a beautiful state in which to live. From October 1987 to May 1994 (6 years 8 months) Chief Editorial Writer @ I spent a year and a half in the journalistically fascinating environment of Boston. My first editorial writing job, a position that allowed me to really have some influence on both the city and state governments in an important state capital. From May 1986 to October 1987 (1 year 6 months) National Political Reporter @ One of my favorite positions. I was able to learn interviewing and reporting techniques from two of the best in the business, the late great Robert Novak and Rowland Evans. From April 1984 to May 1986 (2 years 2 months) Metro Reporter @ My first job out of college and the only one I ever snagged over the phone. The paper had just started, so there were plenty of opportunities. I did my journalistic apprenticeship here: covering police, fire and City Hall. From June 1982 to April 1984 (1 year 11 months) Intern @ Worked with national columnists Rowland Evans and Robert Novak. From June 1981 to August 1981 (3 months) Circulation Dept. @ From 1979 to 1981 (2 years) Master of Science, Finance (cum laude) @ Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration From 1992 to 1997 B.A., Journalism @ New York University From 1978 to 1982 John Barnes is skilled in: Speech Writing, Internal Communications, Media relations, Crisis communications, Editing, Communications Planning, Corporate Communications, Writing, Journalism, Crisis Communications, Media Relations, Blogging, Books, Government, Interviews
