Joanne Black's education began with a BA from the University of California, Berkeley where she earned her English degree in 2006. After leaving UC Berkeley, Black moved to New York City to obtain her master's degree in history from NYU.Black later returned to Berkeley to complete her PhD in history, magna cum laude, in 2016. Her doctoral work focused on the history of race in America.
