I have grown my career and leadership by constantly taking on new (often terrifying) challenges. I've gained depth by leading Compensation, heading up European and Global Recruiting teams, and moving to the US to create a new HR M&A organization. I’ve developed breadth by serving as the Head of HR for two very different, externally reported businesses, where I navigated complex acquisitions integrating new organizations while preserving their culture and what makes them great; invested in the growth of our talent and played a key leadership role as HP separated into two new companies. Externally I took my passion for technology and contribution to a new level by researching & authoring a paper on "how technology has changed the way we work, and what it means for HR”.
SVP Human Resources, Printing and Personal Systems @ I started in this role 6 months before we announced the separation of HP, and the news that we would create one of the two new Fortune 50 companies from this business (“HP” and “Hewlett Packard Enterprise”).
Before our separation was announced I focused on ensuring the organization was focused on the key priorities the EVP and his team had defined, by enhancing our goal setting and midyear conversations activities. I also took the opportunity to design a new approach to performance management that would ensure teams were rewarded for the results they achieved (2014 was a good year with significant growth and new product launches). In parallel, I worked quickly to connect with and develop the HR community, bringing us closer together as team and hiring four new HR leaders in the space of just a couple of months.
Since January I've been focused on the creation our new Company, designing and staffing new business teams across the globe, as well as preparing leaders and their teams for their new assignments (including our Country Managing Directors).
More recently I’ve been transitioning to my new role leading Compensation for HP, developing my own knowledge and training the Executive Team on external governance and responsibilities of Section 16 leadership. In addition my team and I have been driving a significant cultural change in our approach to Executive Titling & Rewards for the new Company. From April 2014 to Present (1 year 7 months) San Francisco Bay AreaSVP Human Resources, HP Software @ This role brought all the experiences of my last few positions together. Providing HR leadership for one of the most entrepreneurial & competitive businesses in HP was an amazing ride, where I learned how to balance different needs and actively drive change in support of our people. I partnered closely with the EVP Software and reporting directly to the CHRO, and supported 15,000 employees in a business responsible for $4bn revenue. My HR team was 30 people strong including HR business partners and experts in compensation, learning & workforce strategy.
My team and I integrated five acquisitions encompassing three Enterprise Security and two Big Data companies, while also supporting the creation of a brand new on-line go-to-market channel, headquartered in San Francisco, by hiring great talent with consumer and digital backgrounds. Over the course of 4 years we improved overall hiring, engagement & retention of key talent through a very targeted people strategy; and I was able to positively change HR’s connection with employees through both my leadership, and my team's engagement.
In addition to this role, in 2013 I led research for HP on “how technology has changed the way we work", which continues to be actively used in client and community engagements today. From July 2010 to April 2014 (3 years 10 months) San Francisco Bay AreaVP, Global Recruiting @ In this role I led HP’s Global Recruitment strategy, organization and processes. With a team of 500 recruiters across 178 countries, we filled thousands of positions annually across a wide range of profiles and business needs.
While supporting the Company's hiring needs, I led our organization's transformation from a heavy focus on filling requisitions, to more focus on pro-active talent pipe-lining, and the quality of our hires. As part of this effort, I secured investment to create a new global Sourcing team, and implemented new techniques to support business growth and their hiring needs. We also developed an new internal talent program, which included the first use of global, on-line career fairs. From September 2008 to July 2010 (1 year 11 months) San Francisco Bay AreaHR Director, HP Global Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) @ At a time when HP was driving significant growth through Mergers & Acquisitions, I relocated from London to San Francisco to create and lead a brand new HR team dedicated to company due diligence & acquired employee on-boarding. I led HR through more than 15 acquisitions over two years including Mercury, Opsware, Knightsbridge and SPI Dynamics.
In parallel I built the HR M&A team from the ground up, hired specialists into the group, and developed our global strategy, processes, toolkits and solutions. This organization and many of the tools we created continue to be used today. From 2006 to 2008 (2 years) San Francisco Bay AreaHR Director, HP Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) Recruiting @ I was promoted to lead the EMEA Recruiting function after successfully project managing organization design & selection for the Compaq integration.
In this role, I led more than 70 staffing professionals, located across the region; drove new approaches to workforce planning, recruitment, relocation and the temporary workforce; gained support for the complete redesign of the organization and operating model to reduce agency spend, improve the hiring experience and the quality of hires; and negotiated pan-region contracts with key external vendors, reducing costs while maintaining service levels in both permanent and temporary recruiting. From 2002 to 2006 (4 years) UKHR Generalist, HP UK Sales @ I provided HR support covering a wide range of topics including organization design, manager support, reward & recognition, and employee development. I created and ran the first UK Management Excellence program to ensure that all managers had the training and tools needed to lead and support their teams. From 2001 to 2002 (1 year) UKSales Compensation Consultant @ In this role I designed and managed all UK sales incentives, non-sales reward & recognition and senior manager bonus programs. I proposed compensation plans to UK General Manager; designed and managed special sales incentive programs; and led training events with all UK Sales employees. I was able to dramatically improve the quality of services provided to our sales teams, and as a result was promoted to the Regional team to lead bench-marking for all European compensation plans. From 1999 to 2001 (2 years) United KingdomRecruiter, UK @ I delivered all recruitment activities for HP’s UK & Ireland Professional Consulting organization, which included sourcing talent; campaign design & talent assessment; and managing our local graduate and professional assessment centers in both the UK & Ireland. From 1998 to 1999 (1 year) United Kingdom
