Jennifer FitzMaurice holds a B.A. from Cornell University in 1985. After completing her college education, FitzMaurice moved to Albany, New York to work at SUNY as a journalism major. In 1987, FitzMaurice transferred to the Missouri Valley College transfer program and earned a M.A. in communications. FitzMaurice then spent two years as a research associate in the Center for Journalism, Media, and Democracy at the University of Missouri- Columbia.Since arriving in Virginia in early2017, FitzMaurice has worked as an associate professor at the University of Virginia's Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. While at UVA, FitzMaurice taught Academy-Level English as a Second Language and Spanish as a Second Language, as well as running the Center for Advanced Writing and Research in English Language and Literatures. FitzMaurice's coursework also includes Topics in Fiction and Novel Writing, English Literature from Chaucer to Dickens, English Language Usage and Usage Analysis, and Thematic Devices in Fiction.FitzMaurice's teaching style is playful, engaging, and able to engage student engagement with Exploratory Writingussions and interactive exercises. FitzMaurice is also a motivated essayist, particular interested in exploring the impact of narrative devices and plot on the reader.
