While I have worked largely in the field of sales, the recent experience of running my own company has taught me a great deal about the many facets of business, including management and strategic development. One of the first major projects I oversaw was to open a franchise business in Boone, NC. For more than 30 years, Valley Maintenance Supply existed solely in Hickory, NC, but after several months, it became clear that there was a demand for our services in the Boone area. I identified several potential qualified franchise owners, but ultimately chose to work with the individual who demonstrated not only the necessary capital, but also a drive for success.
Together, we executed a predetermined franchise plan and opened Clean Mountain Supply in March 2013. I attribute much of my understanding of strategic marketing and business development to the successful execution and completion of this plan.
In my professional experience and opinion, there are few facets of business, and life for that matter, not related to sales in some form or another. I believe we are all selling; whether it is a product, an idea, or even a feeling, we all seek for others to “buy.” So, given that we are all “salespeople,” how do I set myself apart, and how does this relate to the field of management?
First and foremost, I seek to develop lasting relationships. I do not believe in the “one and done” sales pitch; we accomplish more and move further toward ultimate goals when thinking in the long-term.
Second, great customer service goes a long way. Gone are the days of “strictly business;” I follow through with what I tell someone I am going to do and, in any way I can, seek to exceed expectations.
Finally, and rather simply, I strive to be a good and honest person. Such qualities, I have found, are rather hard to come by nowadays; nonetheless, they are inherently valuable.
Working with people, rather than for them promotes growth that can never be undone.
