www.tedmed.com From February 2011 to Present (4 years 11 months) Chairman @ Walker Digital is a privately held research and development lab whose mission is to use the tools of the digital age to create business systems that unlock extraordinary value for consumers and businesses. Since its founding in the early 1990s, Walker Digital has been thinking about a world defined by universal computing, unlimited bandwidth and continuous network access. What Walker Digital does is ask, “How can we reinvent businesses given that reality?”
As Walker Digital has worked to answer this question over the last 20 years, it has invested many millions of dollars to create what is now a broad portfolio of inventions and operating companies. Walker Digital has launched several operating companies to commercialize our inventions in e-commerce, gaming, publishing, retailing, education and other industries. These companies have collectively served more than 100 million consumers, generated billions in revenue and created thousands of new jobs. The best-known company to come out of Walker Digital is priceline.com, one of the leading success stories of first-generation e-commerce with a current market value of more than US$60 billion.
www.walkerdigital.com From January 1994 to Present (22 years) Founder @ Walker Labs, is a privately held research and development lab that creates “moonshot” businesses in health and medicine. Walker Labs designs surprising commercial solutions that also make a difference for big social problems. Its first two start-ups are foodtweeks and LabTV. From January 2014 to Present (2 years) Founder @ LabTV is an online video platform that turns young medical scientists into role models who will inspire students to follow in their footsteps by considering a career in medical research.
America needs more of our best and brightest students to take part in the greatest adventure of our time: medical research. The quest to “crack the code” of health and illness can improve the lives of 7 billion people around the globe.
Unfortunately, most young people don’t know any scientists personally. And, they almost never see any young, working scientists in the media. So today’s students rarely think about joining the team. LabTV is going to change that.
In cooperation with U.S. National Institutes of Health, LabTV is sending amateur and professional filmmakers to 40,000 research labs across America. These filmmakers are creating short video profiles of tens of thousands of young scientists. LabTV’s goal is to help students find role models they can identify with – young scientists who are people just like themselves, and who share their dreams and passion.
LabTV will inspire millions of today’s students to think about becoming tomorrow’s heroes of medical research.
www.labtv.com From July 2013 to Present (2 years 6 months) Founder @ foodtweeks is a free app that helps people better manage their weight while also feeding hungry families at the same time.
800 million times a day in America, and billions of times worldwide, people “tweek” their food by making small changes that remove unwanted calories. For instance, they may ask for less mayo, drink diet soda, or buy a low-fat dressing. This daily habit is a natural part of their everyday lives.
The free foodtweeks app makes it easier for people to tweek their everyday foods more effectively. The app uses a crowdsourced picture database of over 44,000 small changes to show the user how to take calories out of her food without changing the taste or leaving her hungry. foodtweeks also offers the extra benefit of helping to feed the hungry in her community at no cost to the user.
foodtweeks takes just a few seconds to use every time a user eats, cooks, or buys food – as fast as checking the weather or email. And because the app gets a complete picture of everything users eat, foodtweeks can serve businesses by providing valuable consumer insight data and delivering highly targeted offers.
