📖 Summary
I am a Lecturer and PhD student in Economics at the University of Oxford. I am also available as a consultant for both the public and the private sector. My research focuses on local employment multipliers. I try to answer questions such as: How many extra barbers, nurses and primary school teachers will a city need when a big car manufacturing plant opens near it? Is this multiplier bigger in cities with a lot of unemployment? Can we use this to stimulate the economy in lagging regions? Besides being an economist, I have a background in physics and student politics.Lecturer @ Part-time position at New College, Oxford. Teaching classes and tutorials to undergraduate students studying Politics Philosophy and Economics or Economics and Management. From October 2014 to Present (1 year 3 months) Oxford, United KingdomPresident @ From August 2013 to August 2014 (1 year 1 month) OxfordConsultant / Economist @ Part-time consultant on the economics and structure of metropolitan areas for the Governance division of the OECD. From October 2013 to November 2013 (2 months) President @ From October 2012 to October 2013 (1 year 1 month) OxfordEconomist / Policy Analyst @ Analysing policy related to the economics of regions. From July 2013 to August 2013 (2 months) Paris Area, FranceTeaching Assistant Linear Algebra @ As a teaching assistant for Linear Algebra, I taught tutorials on the basics of linear equations, matrix operations and vector spaces combined with a practical course in the use of Matlab. From November 2011 to April 2012 (6 months) President of the Student Government @ I was elected as President of the Student Government to represent the 28.000 students of the University. As President I gained a much broader view of academia and a deeper understanding of how a University works and policy is made. This was a full-time position in the centre of the executive branch of the University. I was the primary advisor of the Executive Board of the University on student issues and as such had daily interactions with the President of the University and the Rector. This was the most challenging but also the most demanding year of my life. I learned a lot about responsibility and perseverance. As with all budget-constrained multi-dimensional institutions, I learned a lot about the workings of the complicated decision making process in which the economic rational as well as support from the staff all play a vital role in achieving the desired goals. Where solutions in physics are quite black and white, wrong or correct, I enjoyed the grey areas and the social implications of university decision-making and solutions. From September 2010 to August 2011 (1 year) Groningen, NetherlandsChairman @ In response to the government cuts on higher education, the Comité Gronings Ontzet organized a rally for 2000 people in the city center of Groningen and created a website for the Dutch senate election: www.stemvoordetoekomst.nl From September 2010 to May 2011 (9 months) Groningen, NetherlandsMember of the Board of the Sciences Faculty @ I was involved in all major policy decisions of the Faculty and was part of the weekly board meetings with the other four board members, including the Dutch equivalent of the University Vice-Chancellor. This was a great experience for me and I learned a lot about the inner workings of the Faculty and the University organisation. Because the University Executive Board wanted to implement an Honours College, a university-wide programme for exceptional students, I collected input for the outline of this program from the students of our Faculty and subsequently created the Faculty Honours program with two other staff members. This gave me insight into the relationship between academia, public society and business. From March 2009 to August 2010 (1 year 6 months) Groningen, NetherlandsProjectmanager @ To make politics more transparent and accessible to the general public using the internet. And to interest the youth in politics via new media. Creating the new development environment HNS.dev. From October 2008 to March 2010 (1 year 6 months) Teaching Assistent Calculus @ Teaching tutorials on basic and advanced Calculus. Checking homework and exams. From September 2008 to March 2009 (7 months) Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil), Economics @ University of Oxford From 2014 to 2016 Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Economics, Distinction @ University of Oxford From 2012 to 2014 Bachelor of Science (BSc), Physics major with a minor in Psychology and Econometrics, Cum Laude @ Rijksuniversiteit Groningen / University of Groningen From 2006 to 2012 Zernike College From 2001 to 2006 Jasper Dijk is skilled in: Economics, Politics, Problem Solving, Higher Education, Teaching, English, Matlab, Physics, Science, Mathematics, Analysis, Statistics, Guitar, LaTeX, Dutch
