About James Cole

📖 Summary

I have just concluded my contract with Vodafone UK, as part of their End-to-End Design Team. I am now permanently employed by Smart421 and so will not be seeking any further contract based work. Previously I have worked on a number of large IT transformation programmes (both onshore and offshore) in the telecommunications industry, retail and public sector both in the UK and abroad. In recent years I have gained good exposure to Oracle technologies (including Oracle RODOD) in complex and heavily integrated environments and worked with a number of Master Data Management solutions. My approach to architecture is practical, I favour meetings and workshops supported by concise documents, over long email chains and ethereal recommendations. I learn and adapt quickly which has allowed me to consistently deliver against challenging timelines.End-to-End Design @ From March 2015 to June 2015 (4 months) Solution Architect - Connect Programme @ As the sole Solution Architect for the FSCS Connect programme (value ~£20m) I produced the Solution Overview/HLD (addressing different aspects of the architecture, as recommended by TOGAF), the Interface Catalogue (all integration points within the programme). The programme included re-engineered business processes, creation of new .NET based claims portal, integrated to Oracle Siebel CRM and OpenText Enterprise Content Management, with reporting via Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE) and data manipulation by SAS DataFlux. As the programme progressed and the design started to mature I chaired the Connect Design Authority. I used this forum to ensure designs and change requests aligned to the architecture and remained true to the business vision. From August 2013 to October 2014 (1 year 3 months) London, United KingdomSolution Architect @ Although I was hired by the FSCS for the Connect Programme my first week saw me reassigned to the finance programme. The programme sought to improve payment security and payment speed, but was understaffed with no roadmap to achieve this. Applying TOGAF, I worked with various SMEs to capture the existing end-to-end processes, key data entities and systems (these included Oracle Siebel, Infor SunSytems and SAS DataFlux) . I used this information to determine potential security weaknesses and defined a target state architecture that would address these weaknesses. To align with milestones of other FSCS programmes I defined a two stage transition architecture and with that agreed I assessed various payment platform vendors before selecting BottomLine WebSeries for the new payment hub. From May 2013 to August 2013 (4 months) London, United KingdomCRM and MDM Architect @ Having proved myself as a Pricing Architect (please see the position below) I was asked to define the architecture for integrating Siebel CRM to Informatica Customer MDM via Fusion middleware. The systems involved were managed by different consultancies and shared across multiple programmes which had led to significant problems in obtaining end-to-end solution alignment. Recognising that the current focus was technical I engaged with business stakeholders to understand what business outcome was required. This allowed me to define business scenarios that I used to structure cross stream (and international) workshops leading to agreement of webservices and data entities required to support LexisNexis's vision of managing customers globally. From February 2013 to May 2013 (4 months) London, United KingdomPricing Architect - CPQ @ I was brought in to replace an architect that had been unable to produce 'accessible' architecture documentation, which had led to programme delays. Already under time pressure and with little useful information from the programme analysis phase I changed the documentation approach to a business centric use case style and ran a series of emergency workshops with key stakeholders. The new document was met with praise (and sign off) by the Business. The document defined a pricing framework that could support LexisNexis across multiple countries and business segments, starting with LexisNexis UK. From November 2012 to January 2013 (3 months) London, United KingdomBSS and CPQ Solution Architect @ Supported Vodafone opcos around the world that were engaged in different phases of large scale transformation programmes, providing solution architecture and driving down system integrator costs. This work included: Vodacom - worked with Programme Manager to refine the Programme Business Case and road map for transformation. In later phases of the programme advised on the use of Oracle Customer Master and Oracle Product Master Vodafone Turkey - worked with local Enterprise Architects to challenge solutions provided by their Systems Integrator. Vodafone Italy - provided analysis that heavily contributed to the cessation of a tightly coupled legacy IT focused transformation programme. This later contributed to the initiation of a new business focused transformation programme Vodafone Group - advised product modelling, order management and the use of Oracle's RODOD solution From September 2010 to September 2012 (2 years 1 month) CRM Solution Architect @ Within 1 week of arriving back in the UK, following 4 years in Australia, I was Siebel lead on the £100m+ Oracle sales bid for the Vodafone UK transformation programme. Over the weeks that followed I ran workshops (40+ people) to allow Vodafone to understand Siebel CRM and for Oracle to understand Vodafone's needs for customer and order management. The sessions led to good stakeholder engagement and allowed revisions to bid estimates and programme plans From June 2010 to September 2010 (4 months) Siebel Application Architect @ From December 2009 to June 2010 (7 months) Melbourne, AustraliaCPQ and Order Management Architect @ From June 2008 to November 2009 (1 year 6 months) Melbourne, AustraliaProduct Architect @ Defined the product architecture to support the selling, servicing and billing of Telstra retail mobile services in complex and heavily integrated IT landscape. This landscape included a bespoke Product Master From February 2007 to June 2008 (1 year 5 months) Melbourne, AustraliaOrder Management and CPQ Designer @ From November 2006 to February 2007 (4 months) London, United KingdomOrder Management Architect @ From February 2006 to August 2006 (7 months) Brussels Area, BelgiumImmunology, 2.i @ University College London, U. of London From 1995 to 1998 Master of Science (MSc), Interactive Multimedia, Merit @ Middlesex University From 2000 to 2002 James Cole is skilled in: Siebel, Order Management, Telecommunications, Solution Architecture, SOA, Integration, Requirements Analysis, Enterprise Architecture, Web Services, XML, Product Management, Architecture, Software Project Management, Master Data Management, Architectures
