About Hartley Brody

📖 Summary

Highly analytical and constantly thinking about scale, I focus on efficient ways to drive the most important metrics for a business or project. My main areas of expertise are web development and technical project management, and I also have experience as an inbound marketer. I plan to start my own company one day, but for now I'm just trying to learn from the best, building my skills and intuition. On the development side, I've built dozens of web applications -- everything from social networks and web scrapers to high performance ad servers and client-side single page apps. On the marketing side, I've created content that's drawn hundreds of thousands of views. I've conducted persona surveys, done database design, scaled websites under heavy load and built fault-tolerant infrastructure to host it all. I have experience at all levels of building a web application, as well as bringing it to market. I have 6 years of experience writing software and working with non-technical stakeholders to build products for the web. I have mentored junior engineers at various stages of their career, and also maintain a tech blog where I write about web, tech and product related topics.Mentor @ Held regular checkins with my mentees, answering their questions and guiding discussion about software development principles, avoiding common issues, and being an effective engineer. The Firehose Project is a "code bootcamp" that teaches students Ruby on Rails through guided and independent projects. From July 2015 to Present (6 months) Freelance @ I help companies hit their key metrics through high-quality web development, technical guidance, and growth tactics. From March 2012 to Present (3 years 10 months) Builder @ First employee at an ad-tech startup, focusing on monetization, user acquisition and product design. Worked on a high-performance lua/openresty ad server doing thousands of requests a second, built consumer-facing JS, Rails and PHP web applications, managed log ingestion for a Big Data pipeline, wrote tech and product specs for overseas developers, developed internal tools for sales and marketing productivity. From July 2013 to January 2015 (1 year 7 months) Freelance Growth Hacker @ Overhauled an internal A/B testing framework and built reporting dashboards so that running experiments in the product was simple and easy. They went from running A/B tests every few months to running several per week. Also conducted the company's first customer persona survey to help discover and categorize four different user archetypes based on psychographics. Additionally, built data visualizations for baseline "vanity" metrics to allow non-technical stakeholders to track company progress. From April 2013 to May 2013 (2 months) Product Engineer @ Worked on the Product team as a Front-End Engineer. Initially, made UI improvements to Marketing Grader, while learning Coffeescript and SASS, then I began working on the core HubSpot product, wrangling APIs and becoming a django expert while making improvements to the settings app in the product. This position required lots of cross-team collaboration and excellent communication skills. Later, I joined the Optimization group within the Marketing team as a Growth Hacker. There, I used my coding skills to conduct research and automate large projects, and also took on some additional SEO work. From June 2012 to March 2013 (10 months) Athletics Webcaster @ Coordinated all of the webcasts for athletic events in a variety of venues, some of which drew 10,000+ viewers. Responsible for setting up, breaking down and inventorying all of the equipment. Also responsible for monitoring the broadcast and being able to respond to any problems quickly and efficiently to maintain a quality webcast. From January 2009 to February 2012 (3 years 2 months) Marketing Intern @ On the dozen-employee marketing team, I worked on a number of projects while learning the ins-ands-outs of inbound marketing from the people who invented the concept. I blogged, ran social media contests, coordinated webinars, directed & produced video, relaunched Inbound Marketing University and did a bit of web design and development. From January 2011 to August 2011 (8 months) Founder, Writer & Web Designer @ Founded a college music blog and managed the writing, design and marketing for it. Built the site in Wordpress and designed the logos (Photoshop) and site layout (CSS). The site grew to several thousand visitors per day within a few months.
