His Master of Comparative Jurisprudence (MCJ) was received in 1975 and his JD was received in 1977. He also studied at Háskóli Íslands from January 1969 to January 1975 and at Harvard Law School from January 1976 to January 1982. There he completed a dissertation on "Greenland and the Right to External Self-Determination" that scholarly journal Desmond Tutu honored him with in January 1982.
