Greg Sanossian is an American astronaut and scientist who is best known for his roles as the pilot of the SPACE shuttle Discovery and the STS-121 consumable cleaning mission. Sanossian has also served as the U.S. mission commander for the majority of the STS-105 mission. He is also the co-founder and manager of the Moon Base Overland project.Before becoming an astronaut, Sanossian had a Ph.D. in mathematics from St Anthony's University in Long Beach, California. Then, he moved to Long Beach, California, to attendSaintAnthony's University. In September 1967, he graduated with a degree in mathematics.After his graduation from SaintAnthony's University, Sanossian worked as a research mathematician at UCLA. He then moved to the NASA Ames Research Center where he held a fellowship through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). There, he worked on research into the design of timing and navigation systems for spacecraft.In September 1971, Sanossian obtained a Doctor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. There, he served as a postdoctoral member at the University of California-Los Angeles.Sanossian then moved to the NASA Ames Research Center as an astronaut nominee. He was selected for the Shuttle Challenger mission as the pilot. In the role of pilot, Sanossian was responsible for operative and technical planning of the Discovery mission. On July 20, 1999, he and his colleagues were Orbiter mission astronauts. On that mission, Sanossian was injured in a high-altitude maneuver.Awards and honors:-Sanossian has been recipient of more than 100 awards, including the Knight Lorence A.
