Dunn began his career in the entertainmentworld when he started working as a production designer at Fuller House for Netflix. He then worked at Warner Horizons where he was responsible for the production design of both Whitey and Anger Management. He then moved on to Partners where he was responsible for the production design of Partners, FX Network and St. George. He then took over as Production Designer at Fuller House from Whitey and Anger Management. He then left Warner Horizon to start his own company, Dunn Design which is now known as Jerry's Universe. In January 2014, he started work on FX Network's produced series, Anger Management. In January 2012, he started work on Disney Channel's produced series, Hannah Montana. He then producedaired on Disney Channel Suite Life on Deck and Suite Life of Zach & Cody.

Gerard Dunn's education has concentrated around the field of Set and Lighting Design, specifically in light and space design. In his undergraduate years, he studied art education at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he got his Bachelor's degree in 1976. He then went on to earn his Masters of Fine Arts in Drama Set and Lighting Design at San Diego State University-California State University, from January 1981 to January 1984.
