Georgios K. Ouzounis obtained a bachelor in Electrical and Electronic Eng. He received his Ph.D. on image analysis and connected morphological filters from the Johann Bernoulli Institute ofMathematics and Computing Science, University of Groningen, The Netherlands, in 2009. From January 2008 to September 2009 he worked at the Democritus University of Thrace - 2nd Department of Surgery,University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli, Greece, as a medical image analyst developing 3-D CT segmentation methods for diagnostic purposes of interest to the Urological Clinic. From September 2009 to September 2012 he was appointed as a researcher at the Geospatial Image Analysis Group of the Global Security and Crisis Management Unit - Joint Research Centre, European Commission, in Ispra, Italy, where he worked on the development of advanced VHR satellite and aerial image analysis algorithms. Since October 2012, he is working in DigitalGlobe as a research scientist on related application areas.
Georgios K. Ouzounis has invented three major algorithms, the dual-input Max-Tree algorithm, the one-pass method for computing Differential Area Profiles (DAP) by Area Zone Decomposition, and the Alpha-Tree. He was the architect of all computational engines and image analysis algorithms related to the DAP vector fields that were used by the JRC Image Query (IQ) system to populate the very first VHR Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL).
Senior Research Scientist @ Design and development of advanced algorithms and methods for global satellite and aerial image processing. From October 2012 to Present (2 years 11 months) Longmont, Colorado, USASatellite image processing expert @ Lead scientist and project manager in: (i) mathematical modelling; (ii) image analysis, processing and mining; (iii) algorithm architecture design, development and optimisation. Data: Very high resolution satellite and aerial optical data. Methods developed address data sizes from GB - TB. Application areas: (i) urban modeling; (ii) security applications; (iii) support to crisis management; (iv) risk assesments; (v) post disaster needs assesments. Major achievemnets and contributions: (i) the CSL model for populating the first VHR Global Human Settlement Layer; (ii) rubble detector for earthquake affected areas; (iii) the ''one pass'' method for computing rapidly the Differential Attribute Profiles; (iv) the Alpha-Tree algorithm for the detailed analysis of VHR imagery (v) the "switchboard" platform for interactive, real-time image information mining on massive data spaces. From September 2009 to September 2012 (3 years 1 month) Joint Research Centre, Ispra (VA), ItalyMedical Image Analyst @ Researcher in 3D medical image analysis methods and algorithms for organ and tumor segmentation. Application areas: diagnosis support and pre-operation planning for the departments of: (i) Surgery; (ii) Oncology; (iii) Urology. From January 2008 to September 2009 (1 year 9 months) University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli, Alexandroupoli, GreeceResearcher in Mathematical Modelling and Algorithm Design @ Research in generalizations of the notion of image connectivity. Key contributions: mask-based connectivity (theory & algorithms), partition induced (pi) connectivity (theory), and hyperconnectivity (theory and algorithms). From 2003 to 2007 (4 years) Sergeant, Infantry @ Command posts as captain in mechanized infantry, and sergeant trainer of the Hellenic Armed Forces. I completed my service as decorated sergeant with specialization in heavy weapons of infantry and ICT expert for the operations office of the 25 Armored Brigade, Xanthi, Greece.
