From June 2012 to June 2014 (2 years 1 month) Greater San Diego AreaLecturer/Adjunct Faculty - School of Public Health @ San Diego State University I serve as a lecturer in the School of Public Health. My emphasis is on the key components of health policy, law, and the policymaking process. This includes not only federal decision making but also the process for the State of California. Students exit the class with skills in developing options for addressing a social/health issue, policy analysis, how to follow a bill and the anatomy of successfully presenting your position on a bill to a decision maker. I developed an "Advocacy Day" simulation in which teams of student must successful conduct and complete a three meeting schedule with legislative and congressional staffers as if they are visiting Washington or Sacramento for the day.I have also created and developed the "If I Could Change One Thing" podcast to further the exposure and influence of the School of Public Health in the region. I took this project from concept to production, creating a team of four student staffers who helped to bring this podcast to airing. Greater San Diego AreaSenior Vice President of Government and Community Affairs @ Borrego Health In this role, I oversee our political engagement in Washington, DC, and Sacramento including coordinating the efforts of our representatives in those capitals. Locally, I engage the staff and enhance relationships with 12 congressional district offices and 20 office of California legislators. As our organization has sites of care in three counties, my responsibilities include developing relationships with the respective elected members of the boards of supervisors and their staff. I developed a political strategy which engaged our elected officials and was ultimately successful in saving our organization over $25 million.I have also been responsible for message development and relations with regional media across platforms. Recently, I crafted a company-wide communications plan to provide consistency of messaging to internal and external consumers. My role within the organization included initiating our Veterans Services division. I continue to maintain responsible for strategic planning of our veterans services initiative with oversight of our veterans services team. I was successful in introducing legislation which had bipartisan sponsorship and whose key elements were merged into the Veterans MISSION Act of 2018. From January 2016 to April 2020 (4 years 4 months) Director of Health Policy and Strategic Communications @ Council of Community Clinics I developed a long term strategy for assuring political support of the clinics so as to increase access to care for up to 200,000 new clients. That's on top of the over 550,000 individuals our clinics already served. I positioned our organization on the forefront of the usage of social media in the community clinic arena in California. Also, I participated in the development of annual budget, which exceeds $5 million. My latest project is overseeing staff and consultants working on our new grant focused on the remaining uninsured in our region.I also lead our emergency and disaster preparedness program, representing the clinics in all regional disaster planning venues, providing technical assistance to our clinics and implementing a program for the continuity of business operations in the event of a disaster.I have written grants grossing over $1.5 million and overseen completion of eight grant awards. I have supervised several program staff including special projects, emergency preparedness, grant writer and program development as well as several consulting contracts. I have also developed our social media presence and developed a plan for sharing information across platforms and organizations. That is besides my work with the traditional media outlets serving as the chief spokesperson for the organization. From February 2008 to December 2015 (7 years 11 months)
