From January 2003 to June 2012 (9 years 6 months) Sailor @ Olympic Sailing Circus Member of the German national team in the 49er class 2002-2007. Won championships in several classes, but narrowly missed Olympics twice. Great experience. From May 2000 to September 2007 (7 years 5 months) Volunteer software engineer / architect @ Wikipedia Designed and developed the Squid cache integration and the MonoBook skin for MediaWiki / Wikipedia. Helped to scale Wikipedia from a single machine to a small cluster with geo-distributed caching on a shoestring. Contributed features like on-wiki script and CSS development. From December 2003 to October 2004 (11 months) Principal Software Engineer @ Wikimedia Foundation Built and lead the Service Infrastructure team, focused on microservices and APIs at Wikimedia. Main projects were the REST API backed by a multi-DC Cassandra deployment (see https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/04/06/wikimedia-rest-api/), and event distribution and processing infrastructure based on Kafka. In addition to project work, we provided shared infrastructure, tooling, and consulting to Wikimedia teams working on service projects.Technologies: Node, Cassandra, Kafka, Redis, Python, PHP, MySQL, Varnish, Kubernetes, Grafana, Logstash From November 2014 to November 2017 (3 years 1 month) San Francisco Bay AreaSenior Software Engineer @ Wikimedia Foundation Led the design and built a team to implement Parsoid, a round-tripping and parallel Wikitext parser and runtime. Parsoid converts wikitext to semantic HTML5 and back. The bi-directional conversion powers visual editing on Wikipedia, which is considered the most challenging technical project at Wikimedia to date (http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/12/changes-wikipedia). Round-tripping content without introducing confusing text diffs required the development of an array of new techniques under the very tight timelines of a top-priority project. See https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/03/04/parsoid-how-wikipedia-catches-up-with-the-web/.Technologies: Node, PEG, HTML5 DOM, C++ From October 2011 to November 2014 (3 years 2 months) San Francisco Bay Area
