About Francesco Fave

📖 Summary

I am a research scientist in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The essence of my work consists in designing, developing and deploying algorithms to improve the decision making process of either humans or robotic agents, in uncertain conditions. To do so, I have developed my skills and expertise in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, optimization, statistics and economics. Currently, I am working at Disney Research, developing algorithms for problems related to deep learning and mobile robotics. Prior to this, I have spent five years in academia, working in internationally renown research groups in the areas of security, optimization, robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning. I am always interested in new job opportunities. September 2015, I will be in the job market again, looking for research / data scientist positions in either the US or the UK.Associate Research Scientist @ Algorithms for training deep neural network (DNNs): I am using tools such as approximate Bayesian inference algorithms, stochastic gradient descent, and non-convex optimization algorithms to develop new ways to train DNNs. (programming languages: C++, Python, Julia) Algorithms for motion planning: I am using tools such as incremental sampling algorithms (RRTs) and non-convex optimization algorithms to derive new techniques for trajectory optimization. (programming languages: C++, Python) From November 2014 to Present (1 year 2 months) Greater Boston AreaResearch Associate (postdoc) @ I work in the TEAMCORE group. The focus of my research is to apply well known techniques pertaining to various field such as multi-agent systems, game theory and operations research to improve the security of various transportation infrastructures such as airports, train stations and ports. From October 2012 to November 2014 (2 years 2 months) Visiting Scholar @ As a visiting scholar, I collaborate with the Agents, Interactions and Complexity Group to do research in the area of Decentralised Coordination which was already the subject of my PhD. From September 2012 to December 2013 (1 year 4 months) Postgraduate Researcher @ My PhD focused on studying decentralised coordination algorithms for teams of multiple robotics agents such as unmanned aerial or ground vehicles when deployed in unknown and possibly hostile environments. I addressed the problem from both a theoretical and a practical perspective. More specifically, i defined, derived and tested various classes of coordination problems and algorithms to address problems requiring the agents to make complex decisions involving multiple parameters, such as different objectives, a mean and a variance of a probability and a bound on an estimate over some dimension. In so doing, this new frameworks and solution concepts allowed to improve the decision making capabilities of the agents deployed in the real world. In addition, I deployed some of these algorithms on some real unmanned vehicles. From May 2009 to September 2012 (3 years 5 months) Southampton, United KingdomVisiting Student @ During my PhD studies, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the prestigious Australian Center for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney. My work consisted in developing and deploying a coordination system allowing multiple UAVs to provide live aerial imagery to the first responders at the scene of a disaster. From February 2011 to May 2011 (4 months) Research assistant @ As a research assistant, I studied and applied a multi-objective planning algorithm to the multi-robot indoor surveillance problem. From 2008 to 2009 (1 year) Student Collaborator @ During my master's, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Planning and Scheduling team led by Professor Amedeo Cesta at the Institute of Cognitive Science and Technology at the CNR in Rome. My job consisted in developing a java implementation of the SAT algorithm that the team was currently working on. From September 2007 to January 2008 (5 months) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Computer Science @ University of Southampton From 2009 to 2012 Laurea Specialistica, Ingegneria Informatica - Sistemi di Intelligenza Artificiale, A @ Università degli Studi di Roma 'La Sapienza' From 2004 to 2007 Laurea, Ingegneria Informatica, A @ Università degli Studi di Roma 'La Sapienza' From 2001 to 2004 Highschool Degree, Scientific Studies @ Lycee Chateaubriand From 1987 to 2000 Francesco Fave is skilled in: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Multi-agent Systems, Algorithms, LaTeX, Programming, Algorithm Design, Computer Science, Mathematical Modeling, Distributed Systems, Data Mining, Statistics, Java, SQL, Optimization
