From August 2010 to August 2010 (1 month) Founder @ Founder of criminal justice reform group at Oberlin College.
"We, as the Prison Justice Project, believe the incarceration system is a counter productive way to create a healthier society. In its current state, the institution systematically dehumanizes individuals based on race, gender, sexual orientation, class, ability, political status, and religion. We are advocating a more humane approach to criminal justice through activism, coalition building, education, outreach, and solidarity. We recognize our unique position as student organizers and because of this, we will hold ourselves accountable to the communities with which we wish to engage. We understand that these issues are multifaceted and we seek to build alliances with other organizations seeking to dismantle systems of oppression."
As the leader of this project I co-taught a college course on the state of American Prisons to 12 students at Oberlin College.
I later secured over $10,000 in two months from grants and donations and managed those funds to both bring in speakers from across the country and finance other college events.
Along with a team of ten others, I launched 3 month speaker series, "Bars, Walls and Bodies" on the future of criminal justice reform.
