Fatih Birol has been working in the oil and energy industry since he joined the management of state-owned industry in Turkey in 1992. He has played a leading role in the development of oil and gas production and extraction in the Turkey industry. fatih has also been working as a Director at the State Oil Company of Turkey and the State Electricity Corporation of Turkey. From 2006 to 2009, he also served as the Deputy Director of the Energy Research and Development Department of the European Commission.He has worked as a Senior Fellow at the International oilcensorges Institution’s Global Energy Program and has beenanu- IEA since 1st July 2014. Mr. Birol overall heads the Energy Department at the IEA where he is working on a wide range of issues related to energy security,

Fatih started his career as an energy professional at the Energy Ministry in Iran in the early eighties. He then worked as an oil and gas analyst at Saudi Aramco and then at the IEA. Fatih has been working at the IEA since 2009. He has played a leading role in reforming the IEA's oil and gas analysis, spearheading the IEA's investigation into the oil industry in Russia, and leading the IEA's oil and gas investment work. He is also a member of the IEA's board of trustees.
