As a software engineer I'm happiest building services in the back-end or at the application tier. I love data modeling and chewing on problems that rely heavily on architecture and systems thinking. I'm experienced with MySQL and with NoSQL technologies like Riak, Redis, MongoDB, and I'm most interested in projects working with Node.js, Scala, or Go.
Software Engineer @ From September 2015 to Present (2 months) San FranciscoSoftware Architect @ Responsible for owning the design, implementation, testing, code deployment, and maintenance of the back-end system and the flow of data through the system including any API endpoints used by the THRED mobile client, working with collections in MongoDB, integrations with third party services including Firebase, Mandrill, CloudSearch. Designed and implemented novel functionality to populate content feeds with near-realtime pushes to connected clients. Supported client engineers by communicating how the back-end system works. From December 2014 to July 2015 (8 months) Berkeley, CASoftware Engineer @ Initially worked on back-end server features (authentication implementing Oauth 2.0, API endpoints, and logic for auto-generation of content) using Node.js, MongoDB, and Nginx running on AWS. We eventually migrated the auto-generator logic to run as Javascript on iOS and have now shifted into working primarily in Objective-C on iOS with SQLite. Designed and implemented event processing system to build knowledge base of incoming sensor data. Currently in all hands on deck mode, working on the mobile device as well as on the server side as needed by the team's priorities. From January 2014 to December 2014 (1 year) Berkeley, CABack-end Engineer @ As a senior level back-end engineer at Bloodhound I designed and implemented the company's first analytics system, helped to build their next phase badge decoding system, and built a business card transcription service to compete against FullContact's "Card Reader" API. I administrated servers hosted on EC2 while working with various other AWS services (Route53, S3, Mechanical Turk, etc.) and building systems using Node.js, Riak, MongoDB, Redis, and MySQL. From March 2013 to December 2013 (10 months) San FranciscoSenior Web Engineer @ As a senior level back-end developer on DocuSign's Web team I helped to maintain and improve the company's corporate and secure payment web sites while helping the team evolve its internal processes and adopt new tools. From July 2012 to March 2013 (9 months) San FranciscoSoftware Engineer, Alternative Lifestyles Group @ As an early member of a brand new team tasked with reimagining the legacy online dating product I jumped into various parts of the stack (both legacy and new) as needed to help get the team up and running. The legacy system was a mess of Perl and we were building parts of the new architecture in Scala running on Tomcat and using technologies like HBase and MySQL. The team's legacy product accounted for tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue within the bigger company. Our product had the goal of making a difference in people's lives while also making money. From October 2011 to June 2012 (9 months) San Francisco, CASoftware Engineer @ As part of a growing team I witnessed Formspring's social network break the 25 million user mark. I fixed defects, added features to the site, documented existing systems as well as the new API for Formspring's iOS app, developed and tested kestrel queue workers, pulled data for business intelligence tasks, and performed a number of other minor tasks. From April 2011 to September 2011 (6 months) San Francisco, CASoftware Engineer, Premium Integrations Team @ Synacor's portals serve one billion page hits per month and have millions of unique users. Working as a developer for the Premium Integrations team and previously for the Search & Advertising team I honed my skills as a versatile enterprise-level back-end, front-end developer who understands a bigger picture while working with the fine details. I'm very comfortable explaining concepts to technical and non-technical audiences using diagrams, writing, and discussion. From May 2008 to March 2011 (2 years 11 months) Buffalo, NYBusiness Engineer Consultant @ Working on a project for local start-up TrueThinker, I researched and prepared business-friendly technical analyses of competitors’ products to aid in executive decision making. From July 2008 to December 2008 (6 months) Buffalo, NYEngineering Intern, Platform Team @ Reporting to the VP of Engineering and to one of the Web Architects, I extensively documented and diagrammed Synacor’s systems, which directly influenced the decision to adopt a new web development framework at the company. From December 2007 to May 2008 (6 months) Buffalo, NYProject Management Intern @ Diving into a company starved for project managers I cut my teeth by coordinating the workloads of dozens of engineers in a very fast-paced and ever-changing start-up environment while running meetings and preparing daily reports on progress/metrics. From May 2007 to July 2007 (3 months) San Diego, CA
