Eric Kohn is the deputy editor and chief film critic for Indiewire. As a freelance critic and journalist, he contributed to The New York Times, New York magazine, New York Press, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, The Wrap, Moving Pictures, Filmmaker, Moviemaker, Heeb Magazine and other places. He serves as a member of the New York Film Critics Circle, the Online Film Critics Society, and the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). While receiving his bachelors degree in cinema studies at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Kohn worked as a research assistant for The Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman and real estate reporter Michael Gross and completed an internship at Entertainment Weekly. After college, he spent several years covering film festivals such as Sundance, SXSW and Toronto for numerous outlets, and began writing for Indiewire at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. A year later, he helped launch Stream Magazine, an online publication dedicated to covering filmmakers in the digital age.
In 2009, Kohn was named Indiewire's chief film critic and was promoted to senior editor in 2011. In that capacity, he reviews hundreds of films each year while also providing other editorial content for the site. He also manages Indiewire's growing network for professional film critics, the Criticwire Network, along with its accompanying blog.
In addition to reviewing new releases, he continues to travel to film festivals around the globe, report on the industry, and moderate events. Kohn runs the Critics Academy workshop for aspiring film critics at the Locarno Film Festival and the New York Film Festival as well as the Sundance Fellowship for Film Criticism at the Sundance Film Festival. He also teaches an undergraduate course in film criticism at NYU.
