After getting my M.Ed. from The University of Georgia, I became a School Psychologist for the Council Bluffs, Iowa Public School System. In this role, I provided assessment and counseling services for teachers and students in the K-12 population. Living in the Heartland was an eye-opening experience for someone who had grown up in the Boston area.
After working in this role for several years, I started to get the “itch” to do something more entrepreneurial. So, I headed back East where I tried my hand at market research and then advertising sales for a small radio station. I loved this job and called on all variety of small businesses. The station was operating on a shoestring so I wrote my own copy, did the production as well as the vocals for the spots. My favorite commercial was for a pizza restaurant called “Samurai Pizza.” The spot was humorous but it also worked, there was a definite uptick in sales. Unfortunately, the station folded but I was hooked on sales. Around this tme, I started to become fascinated with the exploding PC industry. Over the years, that led to positions at some of the most respected companies in the computer industry.
The companies I have worked for were all innovators who advanced technology to solve real world business issues. INGRES was the 1st company to demonstrate the viable use of a relational database in commercial settings. Sybase advanced the relational model to be more performance-oriented. Inktomi pioneered internet search. MarkLogic continues this track record by providing a database/search solution that is addressing business and social challenges that were un-heard of only a few years ago.
Looking back, there is a common thread that drives me: a passion to help people solve problems through creative thinking;; whether determining the optimum learning methods for a child or writing a catchy commercial for a small business or applying innovative technology to help large companies address their business challenges.
