I'm a veteran systems/operations/application engineer on high volume software-as-a-service offerings and their supporting back-end e-commerce, account provisioning, and authentication systems. I have extensive experience supporting a wide variety of technology stacks on Windows- and Linux-based systems. A strong team player, I'm able to see the full scope and sequence of projects from systems architecture and design, to implementation and launch, to ongoing support and maintenance. I have proven success in increasing operability and availability through automation, monitoring and trend analysis, performance tuning, standard operating procedures, training and documentation.
Senior Cloud Automation Engineer, Cloud Operations Engineering @ From July 2015 to Present (4 months) San Francisco Bay AreaSenior Site Reliability Engineer, Technical Operations @ From March 2014 to June 2015 (1 year 4 months) San Francisco Bay AreaSenior Site Reliability Engineer, Digital Publishing Services @ Influenced new and evolving design, architecture, and standards for Digital Publishing Services.
Orchestrated the migration of publishing services from a shared environment to a dedicated cluster. This effort involved provisioning new network, server, and storage infrastructure, instantiating new staging and production VMWare environments, migrating assets to Amazon S3, and decoupling and migrating multiple databases. The end result was a drastic increase in availability and performance.
Spearheaded the migration of the publishing services cluster from a VMWare-based environment to Amazon Web Services. Planned the effort, identified and resolved multiple performance and operational issues, and incorporated AWS-specific technologies into the overall design to improve reliability and scalability. The design also enabled zero downtime deployments across the entire service tier.
Delivered a completely new continuous integration environment based entirely in AWS for both publishing and distribution services. Provided build, test, and deployment automation via a distributed Jenkins system for a dozen engineering teams. The new CI environment enabled the business to adopt a faster development cycle with fewer blocking environmental issues.
Key contributor to major architectural initiatives during my tenure that have improved service availability, resiliency, and performance. Projects have included the migration of distribution services to AWS, the migration of assets and metadata from proprietary storage systems to S3, leveraging standard operational tools to simplify deployments, and optimizing Akamai and ChinaCache CDN configurations to reduce overall load on the application tier and significantly reduce network costs.
