About Eduardo Rubia

📖 Summary

Technologist and Data Scientist driven to create software that people use, find useful, and take pleasure in. From programming through architecture, from green field to maintenance, software is interesting technologically, socially, and intellectually. I enjoy contributing to the process, either through leadership or individual effort, of creating software that is deployed joyfully and is as bug free as possiblePrincipal Data Scientist @ As the Principal Data Scientist at Ingram Content I help anticipate future business needs and identify opportunities for complex analysis. I gathers and analyze data to solve and address highly complex business problems and evaluate scenarios to make predictions on future outcomes and support decision making. I help design and drive the creation of new standards and best practices in the use of data, models, and analytically derived visualization for purposes of product improvement, service definition, M&A and Venture capital activities. I help provide insights to aid executive decision making. From May 2015 to Present (6 months) Santa Monica, CAAdvisor @ I am very fortunate to serve as an advisor to Domino Data Lab. They're building a series of tools to help Data Science teams build models, deploy faster, and impact the bottom line. I advise on product and strategy issues, as well as evangelization of their platform when I see a fit. From March 2014 to Present (1 year 8 months) San Francisco Bay AreaAdvisor @ I am fortunate to be on the Cross Campus advisory board. I have been a member of CC for years now, and have been privileged to watch them grow from their original location to the market leader they are today. I advise primarily on issues of data and analytics, though I also pipe up on plumbing, coffee, and conference room game theory when I feel it is appropriate. From March 2014 to Present (1 year 8 months) Santa Monica, CaliforniaSoftware Engineer Principal @ I actually have two jobs at Ingram. At Lightning Source I am involved in the architecture, design, and development of LSI's newest production and manufacturing tools and technologies. I am also fostering a nascent data science practice providing analytics tools and predictive models leveraging techniques ranging from simple linear classifiers to bayesian networks and random forests on multi-core as well as distributed parallel architectures. Have the privilege of dealing with actual Big Data, in which geographically distributed multi-petabyte datasets are the daily norm. At Ingram Content I work directly with our Chief Venture Capital Officer, providing him with technical due diligence and analysis of potential investments, partnerships, and M&A. I am lucky to be involved throughout the entire VC pipeline, from identification of early stage startups, through the deployment of a team of individuals to do deep dives. From February 2013 to May 2015 (2 years 4 months) Santa Monica, CASenior Software Engineer @ Assisted in the development and launch of the new OneWeb experience, a revolutionary re-implementation of the rent.com property to be a fully responsive design. Implemented web services and supporting infrastructure using modern perl techniques (Moose, Catalyst, etc...) Did extensive work to profile the web application stack, through front end, middle tier, and back end services. Used NYTProf to find hotspots in the codebase and was able to speed up key components of the Rent framework sometimes by up to 50% with minimal code impact by simply refactoring algorithms and data structures. Contributed to the Scrum/Agile process at Rent.com and was a participant in design, development, and product meetings and ideas. Learned a great deal about how an organization that is completely technology driven operates, and the culture that kind of environment flourishes. From September 2012 to February 2013 (6 months) Santa Monica, CAManager, Development Team @ At LSI I am tasked with creating new disruptive technologies that allow us to remain the most dominant player in the Print on Demand space. My emphasis has been plant floor automation as well as automated image processing. We are now the "image processing" provider for the largest online presences in the world in part due to algorithms developed during my tenure. Creation of "business transparency" dashboards has also been an interesting pursuit. One of the most interesting faces of working at LSI has been the management of "extremely large" unstructured data sets. LSI grows their data by terabytes on a daily basis, and writing the tools and technologies to manage and understand that data has been both challenging and exciting. I also implemented a REST service which handles the storage and retrieval of millions of digital assets and transforms them on the fly (and must scale to 100+ million assets.) From June 2006 to September 2012 (6 years 4 months) Owner @ At Arino Industries we created software and technologies in a number of fields. Our clients required process and control automation, machine learning based automated QA (neural networks for electrical testing, etc...), and RFID. In the RFID space in particular we created one of the first "plant floor transparency" solutions that RFID enabled an entire production line, from "genetic algorithms based schedule generation" wherein we built what was the single most profitable unit at each put-on cycle, to per-station intelligent virtual inventory and kanban, through Wal-Mart "slap and ship" compliance. From 2004 to 2006 (2 years) Consultant @ During my tenure at NASBA I helped design and project manage the largest accounting professional education compliance expert system ever developed. A joint venture between NASBA and D&T, this software system attempted to encode all of the rules for all of the possible accounting jurisdictions in the US, and given someones transcript, provide a listing of compliant jurisdictions as well as do a gap analysis for non-compliance. From August 2003 to September 2005 (2 years 2 months) Senior Software Developer @ At phyve I was tasked primarily with the creation of a secure communications infrastructure for a Meditech terminal emulator. This was a Java based product designed to allow remote medical workers access patient medical records securely without the need for complex VPN administration. This was a fully java project and I learned the insides of Tomcat project pretty thoroughly. From 2002 to 2003 (1 year) VP of Software Development @ Acymtech was one of the first "pure open source" technology consulting firms in the greater Nashville area. Attempting to create software solutions for our clients leveraging the LAMP stack before it even had that name, utilizing our own full-stack framework (before they even had that name) in mod_perl. We also worked extensively with e-learning companies and with data telemetry through SMS. From 2001 to 2002 (1 year) CTO @ TIG was a company I started whose purpose was to analyze the technologies and technology plans of early to middle stage venture funded companies. By providing an honest assessment of the maturity and potential of the technologies being developed within an organization, we were able to allow the venture capital fund to make a more informed decision regarding realistic valuation and follow-on funding commitments. From 2000 to 2001 (1 year) CTO @ At Surfari we were one of the first "truly semantic" price comparison shopping engines. We created one of the first "semantic web spiders" and "forest and trees" search engines for unstructured data. I lead up the technology and architecture while attempting to secure VC funding or find a home through M&A. The company was eventually purchased by a publicly traded company for the technology. From 1999 to 2000 (1 year) Senior Software Developer @ At Setech I developed one of the first "web based ERP" systems for GM in order to provide the MRO within GMs subsidiaries rapid access into their inventory, parts, and levels. This was before there were any web based technologies to speak of deployed at GM as the first version had as it's target browser Lynx :) Follow-on versions were targeted for more advanced browsers (with tables!) and included varied technologies such as automated warehouse inventory leveling using Genetic Algorithms and machine learning. From 1997 to 1999 (2 years) Intern @ Built Java applets to do real time flight status visualizations for the airline using very early JDBC and Applet technology. From 1997 to 1997 (less than a year) Master’s Degree, Negotiation, Conflict Resolution & Peacebuilding @ California State University-Dominguez Hills From 2015 to 2017 BS, Computer Science @ Middle Tennessee State University From 1996 to 2005 Data Science, R, Python, Hadoop @ General Assembly From 2013 to 2013 Eduardo Rubia is skilled in: Perl, MySQL, JavaScript, Java, REST, Linux, Software Development, web services, Big Data, Ebooks, Creative Problem Solving, Puppet, Agile Methodologies, Scrum, LAMP, Confluence, JIRA, Unix, Tomcat, MongoDB, Python, Pdf, Node.js, Image Processing, Bicycle Repair, Software Design, Software Engineering, Architecture, OS X, Apache, PHP, R, Plack, Backbone.js, Go, Hadoop, MapReduce, Web Services, Oracle, CSS, Computer Science, Architectures, Algorithms, Data Science, Proposal Writing, Microsoft Excel
