Mandica first attended community college in North Carolina before transferring to Emory University in Atlanta, where she graduated from with a degree in mechanical engineering. Mandica began her professional career in 2003 as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After a five year stint at Illinois, she returned to Emory in 2009 as an associate professor of engineering. In 2016, she was named associate professor of engineering and early childhood education at the University of Cincinnati. She has held these appointments until her current role as an associate professor at the University of Cincinnati.Mandica has authored and published a number of articles on engineering education and early childhood education topics. Her most recent article, "A New Paradigm in Engineering Education: The Role of Design and Inspiration in Young Children's Learning", was published in the journal "Science Education".Mandica's research focuses on bridges and the design of bridges. She has also published a number of papers on the development of early childhood education programs.
