Greater Seattle AreaSenior Software Dev Engineer - Amazon Flex @ Amazon Automated Surge PricingAmazon Flex offers a gig economy for crowd sourced delivery partners who are willing to work on a flexible basis for delivering Amazon.com as well as Prime Now orders. Securing additional labor during times of low supply becomes challenging at the scale of Amazon. It was crucial to incentivize delivery partners to work for Amazon in order to meet the expected order volumes. I led the architectural design and development of automated surge pricing for Amazon Flex programs. We collaborated with research scientists working on machine learning models that suggest prices based on a number of factors that influence the supply of labor that could potentially materialize in the future. I worked on automating the steps involved in building and developing ML models at scale. This helped us in fostering an environment where developers and research scientists alike can experiment to validate their hypothesis and roll-out features quickly to production in a controlled manner. This multi-year effort has now been launched in multiple countries across the world and it has lead to a hands-off the wheel state where surging happens automatically obviating the need for manual intervention. So far, it has resulted in savings ~100 man-hours per week and enabled us to sustain higher rates of filling labor supply (>97%) in US alone.
