📖 Summary
I am currently transitioning from professional astrophysicist to professional data scientist. I recently concluded an ASI fellowship in Data Science and Business Analytics, based in London, where I worked with Easyjet to predict crew absences. I have now begun working with Featurespace. For the past 5 years I have been a research associate at the University of Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy. My research focussed on characterisation, analysis and scientific exploitation of data from the ESA Planck satellite. I led the Planck team detecting the largest objects in the universe, the galaxy clusters, using the SZ effect. In February 2015, we released the the final all-sky survey of these objects, producing a dataset that will be used well into the next decade for frontline astrophysics and cosmology research. I have also produced several publications on algorithms for data analysis, including methods to compress large datasets and methods to validate Bayesian posterior estimations, and developed extensive programming skills in Python and Fortran, including high-performance parallel programming.Data Scientist @ Featurespace is a growing Cambridge spin-out that is one of the market leaders in adaptive behavioural analytics, utilising statistical and machine learning approaches to return information and insights from continuous streams of customer data. Many of our clients are in the financial services and online gaming industries, where fraud detection and customer churn are major concerns. I am pleased to start working with Featurespace in June 2015. From June 2015 to Present (7 months) Data Science Intern @ This was a 2 month data science project with easyJet plc focussing on improving the efficiency of crew standby coverage while keeping planes flying without disruption. I delivered improved predictions of crew absences using 3 years of crewing data, developing a solution using machine learning (random forests, gradient boosted trees) in python (pandas and scikit-learn), with a potential wage saving of £10m per year. I also provided the business with insights into the factors driving crew absences in order to improve staff efficiency and identify which important features were within the control of the business. From March 2015 to April 2015 (2 months) Data Science Fellow @ A competitive eight week post-doctoral fellowship designed to be a bridge for academics from top universities transitioning into commercial data science. The programme provided intensive training in the fundamentals of data science, as well as individual mentor-led projects aimed at building a strong data science portfolio. The content of the fellowship had a modular structure, allowing fellows to address technical skills gaps and to develop the business 'soft skills' that are largely ignored by academia. It also provided an excellent introduction into the global data science network. From February 2015 to April 2015 (3 months) London, United KingdomResearch Associate @ Analysis and scientific exploitation of data from the ESA Planck satellite. I led the team detecting clusters of galaxies. We produced one of the principal data products of the mission: the galaxy cluster catalogue. This is now expected to stimulate research into galaxy clusters for the next decade and is available for posterity at the ESA Planck Legacy Archive: http://pla.esac.esa.int/pla/#catalogues From February 2010 to April 2015 (5 years 3 months) DPhil (PhD), Astrophysics @ University of Oxford From 2006 to 2010 MSci, Astrophysics, First-class honours @ UCL From 2002 to 2006 David Sutton is skilled in: Data Analysis, Python, Statistics, Data Mining, Numerical Analysis, Astrophysics, Research, Science, Bayesian inference, LaTeX, Problem Solving, Unix, Fortran, Matlab, Analysis
