He then became an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University from September 1986- September 1990. After being a professor at Carnegie Mellon University from 1990-2002, Curtis Songer began his academic career at the University of Oklahoma in 2002 and served as an associate professor. He then became a professor at the University of Alabama in 2003 and served as the chair of the Department of Business Administration. Curtis Songer then took a leave to become the professor at the University of Kentucky in 2006. He then took a leave to become the professor at the University of Tennessee in 2010. He then took a leave to become the professor at the University of Mississippi in 2012. He then took a leave to become the professor at the University of Alabama in 2014. After a year of leave, Curtis Songer returned to the University of Oklahoma to serve as the professor of Business Administration. He has since been a professor at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama since September 2022.
