Craig Wallen's education has concentrated primarily around the field of education policy and practice, though he has also pursued a number of other coursework in various areas of policy and governance. Wallen earned his B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1996. From there he proceeded to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (D.P.H.) in Policy and Governance from Youngstown State University in 2018. specializing in Education Policy and Practice, and Governance. Wallen had earlier worked as a Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a Washington D.C.-based research organization. In that role, he provided expert commentary onissues related to education and higher education.Wallen first came to national attention as the administrator of the Illinois State University (ISU) campus community college, where he restructured and launched a new learning environment in which students could receive college-level instruction while also working. The reform, which Wallen call "Living Learning Lab," received positive media attention and was seen as a model for similar campuses across the country.Wallen was also the driving force behind the successful passage of Illinois' first Walker-Price pension reform bill, which increased investment returns for state and local pension plans, while also protecting payouts for retirees.Wallen has also been involved in a number of other high-level policy and governance initiatives. He served as a Commissioner on the Illinois Education Authority (IEA), which is responsible for developing statewide policies related to education.
