Christian Widmer's educational background is in computer science and molecular biology. He graduated from University of Tuebingen with a degree in computer science in 2008. After, he held a post-doctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, where he studied machine learning and Bioinformatics. In 2013 he obtained his PhD degree, using machine learning and Bioinformatics tools to understand the complex neuronal networks.Since his graduation, Christian Widmer spent two years doing post-doctoral research at the Swiss company Exact Sciences, where he focused on computer vision and natural language processing. In conjunction with his then-current supervisor, he developed a machine learning toolkit to Miscellaneous Max [email protected]ät Tübingen that gives biologists the ability to forecast the behaviour of molecules in fixed and large data sets. This approach has been applied to studying cancer growth and metastasis, and has led to valuable insights for the development of new cancer therapies.Since he started his research, Widmer has been the leader of the project “Sequential machine learning for phylogenetic analysis” at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, where he continues to work on model training, featureagging and annotation for phylogenetic trees. With his immediate supervisors at the University of Tuebingen and the Swiss company Exact Sciences, he has also been working on several next-generation machine learning algorithms and protocols.In his free time, Christian Widmer enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He is also an ordained minister and currently works as a research pastor in a Protestant-affiliated church in Zurich.
